About Jake Watkins
Passionate Storyteller. Buffalo Content Creator. Professional Hype Man.I’m a 27 year old On-Air Personality/Producer in Buffalo, NY. I love telling stories of my hometown and the inspiring people/businesses that make Buffalo the City of Good Neighbors.***The rest of my bio is semi-outdated (written in January 2021), but I'm sure there's someone out there who needs to read something like it.***One thing I’ve learned early on in my career, is that the challenges you face have many forms. Sometimes they’re rapidly approaching deadlines, new responsibilities, and sometimes they’re within yourself. I moved away from my hometown of Buffalo, NY in May of 2019. About two weeks before I graduated from the University at Buffalo, I accepted what I thought was my dream job. It combined my passion of filmmaking and creating digital content with the valuable knowledge in Business Marketing I absorbed at UB.Fast forward nearly two years and we’re in the midst of a pandemic, and I’m six and a half hours (on a good day) away from the city I grew up loving, living in my girlfriend’s parents’ basement. I’ll never take for granted their love and how they welcomed me into their home, but the state of the world and the social media fatigue from constantly posting about COVID-19 and all the horrific events of last year (for work of course), along with being stuck in unfamiliar territory that I can’t explore… it wore on me. The nature of my work compounded with the state of the world was too much for me to handle, and I resigned from my position to focus on myself. Do I regret it? Absolutely not. I’m in the best place mentally that I’ve been since high school, and I’m eager to step into my next role and contribute to whatever company I’m lucky enough to represent. I’m not ashamed to admit that I’ve had my battles with mental health and I feel like I’ve conquered them. Unfortunately, this came at the expense of stepping away from the job that I left home for. In college, they told us not to get too personal in our LinkedIn bios, but the biggest thing I value in a potential employer is their culture. And if this quick look into who I am is a dealbreaker for you, we just might not be a good fit.***If you feel like you might need to leave your current position to focus on yourself, my DMs are open. It's an impossible situation to navigate by yourself.***

On-Air Personality/Producer
Head Of Digital Growth, Contributor
Freelance Marketer
I collaborate with local marketing agencies to enhance their clients' digital presence through social media, blogs, webinars, and digital advertising. I love telling the stories of these local brands, and increasing their footprints on the City of Good Neighbors.
Head Of Stories
Head of Stories - an unconventional title to say the least, but it's much more synonymous with the Storyhunter brand than "Content Marketing Manager" or "Digital Media Coordinator". The members of our community don't just create content, they tell intriguing, unknown and necessary stories, from literally every corner of the world. I help showcase their amazing work to the world and write about some of the all-star freelance filmmakers, photographers and journalists that the Storyhunter platform has to offer.
Marketing Intern
Storyhunter is a startup located in Brooklyn that connects freelance digital content creators with brands, agencies and publishers. As an intern here, I:• Created content for six social media accounts, increasing traffic to our website via social platforms by 36% in three months• Collaborated on an experiential content & lead generation campaign for the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity• Instituted tracking methods for social media and newsletter performance, website referral sources and assisted in doing so for revenue by lead source
Trade Show Assistant
The International Luxury Outerwear Exposition (ILOE) is an annual trade show where wholesalers and retailers network. My responsibilities at ILOE included:• Checking in attendees and providing customer service to them through out the duration of the trade show• Distributing pertinent information and supplies to those in attendance • Establishing deep, long-term relationships with attendees and creating a welcoming environment
Social Media Intern
During the Fall of my senior year at the University at Buffalo, I was chosen to work with a wonderful group of marketers on a crowdfunding campaign for the BFLO Hall of Fame Experience. The BFLO Hall of Fame Experience is a museum that will soon be coming to the Western New York region that will combine Buffalo's Halls of Fame for Sports, Music and Broadcasting into one interactive experience. While we didn't reach our financial goal, I learned a lot about social media marketing and the importance of good communication when working in a team. Some lessons I learned that I'll take with me throughout my professional career are:• It is imperative to plan out social media posts and campaigns well in advance so that if changes need be made, it is easier to adapt.• When setting goals, they should be both realistic given your resources, but also not too easily attainable where they aren't challenging to reach.• Working remotely offers flexibility and requires discipline.
Marketing And Communications Intern
I was privileged to serve as NetPlus Alliance's Marketing and Communications Intern for the Summer of 2018. While in this role:• I learned about the value of establishing and maintaining relationships in business• I became familiar with Google Analytics and used this platform to analyze website performance• I designed emails, tailor-made to our clients' exact needs and desires, using Pardot
Team Leader
I worked long shifts at one of Buffalo's most famous locally owned fast food joints. Some managerial responsibilities include inventory tracking, running a shift of at least 7 people and reconciling customer complaints. Here I have improved myself in respect to:• Time management• Conflict resolution, both with employees and customers• Leadership skills• Being able to teach and work at the same time• Patience with those less experienced than myself
Sales Associate
Here I learned the importance of:• Keeping a clean and organized workspace• Multitasking• Establishing good relationships with all customers, but also important ones like Season Ticket Holders and players' parents
Server/Chef
Connors' Hot Dog Stand is a local summertime legend in my hometown of Angola, NY. They've been recognized for having the best fries in Buffalo multiple times, and I still find myself privileged to have contributed to their 75-year legacy. This was the first job I ever had, and for that reason, it is one of the most important. Here, I learned:• How to work under stressful conditions for long periods of time• The importance of taking pride in whatever position you hold, no matter how small it is• The importance of trust within a family run business, and any company for the matter
Associate Producer
I was a part of the group of students that got WSTF-TV, our school newscast, running proficiently for the first time in decades. I had many responsibilities here.I was an administrator for our social media pages and work towards expanding our audience not to just students, but also to parents and alumni of Saint Francis.I wrote, filmed, edited and was on screen for our commercials, newscasts and sports updates. Here is where I found my passion for sports. In the previous paragraph I mentioned the sports updates that I worked on. My friend Jason and I started a weekly sports show called "Jake and Jay in the Morning". Together, we wrote scripts for the show, coordinated videographers for school sporting events, edited the shows, and taught younger students what we learned so that they could carry on the club and continue to make it successful and innovative. When it was re-establsihed in 2011, WSTF-TV was the only student-run news broadcast in private schools in Western New York. I consider it a privilege to have had the opportunity that I did in working with this club.
