About Jameel Marafie

I love science and technology being used to provide valuable solutions to complex problems for society. My aim is to continuously pursue activities that help contribute to the development of these solutions, to help organisations become sustainable in the coming decades and ensure our world and all life can prosper. Over the last 17 years I've built up diverse knowledge and experience across domains in science, technology, and business. I obtained a Master of Chemistry degree from the University of Bath (2010), and subsequently a Master of Plastic Electronic Materials degree (2014) and a PhD (2017) from Imperial College London. During my PhD I studied new materials and processes for organic light emitting diode (OLED) technology with the aim to replace light emitting materials that were based on rare earth metals. All these academic experiences provided a solid foundation in the scientific method and research and development (R&D), along with deep expertise in Chemistry, Material Science, Photophysics, and Optoelectronics. For over a decade I’ve also worked as a R&D consultant, helping hundreds of companies with R&D across multiple industries, including Chemical Manufacturing, Food, Pharmaceuticals, Waste Management, Product Design, Electronics, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, and Software. I’ve been actively involved in business development, financial management, technical writing, and consulting with these organisations and their leaders, helping to provide a breadth of knowledge in product development, business innovation, and sustainability. In the last 7 years my primary focus has been building Headlight AI and its products and services, which help utility and construction companies to assess, map, and digitise critical underground infrastructure, such as tunnels, sewers, culverts, and pipes. At Headlight we use state of the art sensor technology, which we combine with our own proprietary software and artificial intelligence (AI), to enable robots to collect and process data where it would be unsafe or challenging for humans. This approach improves health and safety during data collection, provides unique data and insights regarding the location and condition of critical assets, and offers a scalable solution for infrastructure inspection and maintenance. Headlight AI’s solutions are currently targeted at the Utilities, Rail, Mining, and Construction markets, but will have wider use cases across robotics in the future. I co-founded Headlight AI towards the end of 2017 to develop next-generation sensing and data processing solutions for extreme environments. The business now focuses on the inspection and mapping of challenging subterranean environments such as underground tunnels, sewers, and culverts predominantly across the water and wastewater industry, but also applicable across the Utilities, Rail, Mining and Construction industries. We develop our own technologies whilst also adopting the latest advancements in sensing and deep learning, specifically to overcome the perception and localisation challenges of inspecting such critical infrastructure. If you want to learn more about our products and services and how we may help you then please contact me directly or go to www.headlight.ai for more information.

  • Imperial College London
Plastic Electronics Researcher (Mres And Phd)
Imperial College London Oct 2013 - Sep 2018
    South Kensington, London
I researched novel materials and processes for the field of plastic electronics; which involves the use of organic (carbon based) materials for electronic applications. My focus was on optoelectronic materials, and my first year of research led to a MRes in Plastic Electronics. The following years involved research that led to a PhD from the Physics department at Imperial College London. My research project investigated new light emitting materials for organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs), and was a multi-disciplinary project involving chemistry, photophysics, material science, and optoelectronics. My project is connected to the Centre for Plastic Electronics (CPE), of which further information can be found at www3.imperial.ac.uk/plasticelectronics.
