As part of my studies, I am involved with a Professional And Community Engagement (PACE) unit of my studies, in which I have been assisting with editing and testing the PyKOALA python framework for the HI-KOALA IFS Dwarf Galaxy Survey. I have built an understanding on how data processing is done through reducing and analysing the integral field spectroscopy (IFS) data, applying throughput corrections, sky subtractions, telluric corrections, and absolute flux calibrations to produce a clean Reduced Stacked Spectra (RSS) file. I have been able to observe galaxy kinematics and have conducted a project where we find the kinematics of selected galaxies by running various processing and modelling using python coding. One other project I have completed involved calculating Jupiter’s mass through collecting orbital data of Jupiter’s moons, that were fed into a Python based coding framework that we built to evaluate how effective ground-based observations were in verifying Jupiter’s mass. Through the code we evaluated the accuracy of modelling Jupiter’s moon’s orbital periods. This Project helped to build my understanding of python coding skills and improve my collaborative and time management skills. I was effective in communicating our findings with peers and academic advisors and was able to actively adapt and overcome obstacles in the experimental process.I also undertook a project where I investigated a specific stellar process, utilising Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics (MESA) and gaining experience in using an open source data simulation and modelling tool. Whilst being less team based, this activity also provided an opportunity for me to show my active learning and creativity in project development. This project made me independently think about how to best represent, analyse, and then describe a very specific physical process, and verify my findings with astrophysical knowledge gained throughout my course.
