As a professional writer with 25+ years of experience, including nine years on the senior editorial staff at Bon Appetit magazine and another four at Islands magazine (where I was also editor in chief), I help clients to communicate clearly – for any purpose and on any media platform. I draft original text and edit text that they provide. The result is always clean, clear, crisp copy that's easy and engaging to read and therefore gets the point across. And isn't that the point?I began in newspapers in Los Angeles, moved to magazines, and have since written and edited copy about everything from carburetor overhauls and trends in the jewelry industry to food, wine, spirits, islands around the world, social science, economics, renewable energy, environmental sustainability, ecology, nanotechnology, architecture, high-end homes, dental equipment, lingerie and elder care – to name several.I occasionally teach essay writing at the local community college.GoalsTo help clients create, focus, sharpen, or polish their message -- and to be paid reasonably for it.Specialties: Food, travel and science are particular strengths, I suppose, thanks to my exposure to those areas in long-term employment situations. But writing is about having a perspective, a sensibility, a broad background of contextualizing experience. It also requires the ability to ask the right questions, to listen keenly, and to express ideas with precision, concision, rhythm and flow. I don't assume readers get it; I connect the dots for them. Clarity is king.

Think: Versatile generalist. Tenacious reporter. Obsessive grammarian. In the age of electronic media, grammar is dying, and that's ok...sometimes. But it remains important, too, not because grammatical traditions are inherently good but because, as I said above, clarity is the bottom line, and grammar helps achieve it. A reader who is confused by poor punctuation, broken grammar, incorrect word choice, irregular usage, mangled idioms, imprecise phrasing, etc. soon becomes disengaged from the material and stops reading. I figure that if it's worth writing and worth paying someone to write (or edit), it's worth having it written in a way that increases the likelihood that the material will actually get read and be understood.
