James Bain completed a BSc (Hons) in Physics at the University of St Andrews in 2006 and was subsequently awarded the Bobby Jones Fellowship to study for a MSECE in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, which he received in 2007. In 2012 he completed an EngD in Photonics with the Centre for Microsystems & Photonics at the University of Strathclyde and Rolls-Royce plc, looking at tunable diode laser spectroscopy for aero engine related applications. This was followed by a period as a post-doctoral research associate at the University of Strathclyde working with the FLITES consortium (Fibre Laser Imaging of Gas Turbine Exhaust Species). In 2013 he joined the Innovation Business Unit at M Squared Lasers Limited in Glasgow and worked on project and programme management across an extensive portfolio of H2020, FP7 and Innovate UK collaborative research and development programmes. In 2021, he was appointed Director of Innovation working within the Quantum Research & Systems business unit.

Engd Research EngineerRolls-Royce Jan 2008 - Feb 2012Near infrared tunable diode laser spectroscopy (TDLS) has become an established technology for determining gas parameters in industrial applications. Line-of-sight values for temperature, concentration, pressure and velocity of key gas species can be used to yield important performance information; this project developed novel and existing spectroscopic techniques for the purpose of monitoring aeroengines during ground testing. Key project activities encompass a range of sensor design considerations: fundamental absorption spectroscopy, fibre and bulk optical system design, harsh environment field testing, optoelectronic hardware and signal processing optimisation.
