About James Barnet

I am a highly motivated, hard-working and meticulous geologist, writer and published author.I have written two books, including a geologically-themed guidebook to hiking in the Scottish Highlands and a detailed guide to the geology and fossils of the New Forest (southern England). I have also published three academic papers and numerous other articles for geological and travel magazines.I completed my PhD at the University of Exeter in December 2018 and am currently working as a postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of St Andrews. My main academic research interests involve the study of palaeoclimatic and palaeo-environmental change using stable carbon and oxygen isotope (δ13C and δ18O), trace element (Mg/Ca and B/Ca) and boron isotope (δ11B) records from foraminiferal carbonate, with a particular focus and interest on the greenhouse world of the latest Maastrichtian to early Palaeogene (~67-50 Ma).I have experience of giving oral and poster presentations at a number of major international geoscience conferences including the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), American Geophysical Union (AGU), European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE), and the International Conference on Paleoceanography (ICP).

This time interval represents the reversal of a long-term Late Cretaceous global cooling trend and the onset of global warming through the Paleocene to Early Eocene, which culminated in the Early Eocene Climatic Optimum (EECO; ~52-50 Ma). As well as a long-term warming trend, this time interval also contains evidence for multiple transient "hyperthermal" events, characterised by the release of massive quantities of greenhouse gases (either carbon dioxide or methane) over a geologically brief time period of 10’s of thousands of years, rapid global warming at both the surface of the Earth and in the deep ocean, as well as ocean acidification and consequent dissolution of deep-sea carbonates. By performing spectral analysis of my δ13C and δ18O records, I identified the principle forcing mechanisms driving the carbon cycle (δ13C) and climate (δ18O) during this time, along with the phasing between the records, which can offer an insight into the types of carbon stores released and the associated mechanisms during hyperthermal events.I also generated orbital-resolution Mg/Ca and B/Ca records from the Indian Ocean Ninetyeast Ridge IODP Site U1443 and ODP Site 758, spanning the Late Paleocene to Early Eocene (~58-53 Ma). I generated mixed layer, thermocline and benthic trace metal records to not only identify long-term changes in temperature (Mg/Ca) and carbonate chemistry (related to pH and dissolved inorganic carbon concentration; B/Ca) at various depths within the water column of the low-latitude Indian Ocean, but also to identify changes on orbital timescales.
