James Baxter is a professional biologist with over 25 years of experience in undertaking technical and research projects of a wide range of scale. James is a fisheries/aquatics biologist based out of the Kootenays in BC. Currently he is working for the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation as the Sinixt Principal Biologist/Senior Manager. Prior to this he has worked internally for FortisBC, BC Hydro, DFO and the BC government. From 2020 to 2022 he was the Aquatics Biologist for FortisBC. From 2002 to 2020 he worked for BC Hydro both as an operational Natural Resource Specialist in addressing the company’s operational environmental issues, and as a Senior Fisheries Biologist in addressing the company’s footprint environmental issues. Prior to 2002 he worked as an independent environmental consultant for government agencies, industry, first nations, and public groups. During his career he has developed successful communication and partnering strategies to ensure the completion of key projects and initiatives. He carried these strategies and past experience to his various roles..The projects he has undertaken during his professional career have focussed on fisheries research, fisheries management, environmental impact assessment, hydropower environmental and fisheries issues, and fisheries conservation. Completion of these projects has included extensive project, contract and budget management, staff and contractor oversight, liaison and relationship building with government and first nations groups, working in a multidisciplinary team, analyzing complex data, and presentation of this work in several forums.
