My legal specialisations are commercial and property litigation.What does that involve?I act for landlords, tenants, property and business owners. While lawyers like myself would like to get involved when agreements between two parties are made in the first place — so we can discuss the ‘what-if’ scenarios and prevent things from going wrong— the reality is that we are often brought in once there is a serious commercial problem. Usually we are then able to negotiate a sensible outcome for our client, without resorting to going to court. But if one of the parties is unwilling to negotiate, disputes sometimes do end up in court, with all the stress and cost that this entails. Barcan+Kirby is a great firm to work for. Why? Because the Partners and staff here are nice, normal people. Not stuffy. Not pushy or self-important the way some solicitors are. While we all work very hard (too hard!), it is a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. It’s also a progressive, open-minded firm, which is important in this rapidly changing world that we live in. If I wasn’t a lawyer I expect I would have ended up as a teacher of history or politics. Those are the books I read in my spare time. It’s similar to law in a way: collecting up fragments of evidence and constructing a factual argument based on that evidence.
