Best known as a Grammy winning music producer & mixer at Montreal’s Breakglass Studios, James Benjamin has established himself as a leader in the fields of writing, recording, mixing & broadcasting audio from within the walls of the recording studio as well as on location around the world. More recently he has expanded into the realm of 3D, immersive & experiential sound & music for video-games, VR & AR, & installations.Notable albums mixed by James include Kaytranada’s Grammy winning single 10% and Kaytranada and Van Jess’ single Dysfunctional, Pelada’s Moviemiento Para Cambio, Purity Ring’s Lofticries, The Posterz Junga, Mozart’s Sister’s Being, and CFCFs Outside, and James has also served as the host and main mixer of the Live From Breakglass series mixing live albums for such bands as Stars, Plants and Animals, Bombino, The Luyas, Little Scream, and Moonface.In 2017, James partnered with Seattle based radio station KEXP & produced and mixed KEXP live from Breakglass sessions featured on KEXP’s terrestrial airwaves & their popular Youtube channel.In 2017, James & composition partner Mamoru Kobayakawa were engaged to compose and produce the original soundtrack for AAA video game Ancestors The Humankind Odyssey, for Patrice Desilet’s studio Panache Digital Games.In the realm of 3D and immersive sound, James partnered in 2017 with Las Alturas del Coton, and Las Amistad National Peace park in Costa Rica, as well as the Arizona Centre for Nature Conservation/Phoenix Zoo, to record several hundred hours of ambisonic rainforest recordings in Las Alturas de Cotton, specifically focusing on the environments of threatened species in protected areas [Atelopus Varius (harlequin frog) and Panthera Onca (Jaguar)]. In 2020, the first iteration of the installation Ecological Ambisonic Recording 001 opened as part of the Never Apart gallery’s spring and summer programs. The exhibition features a 24 hour time accurate ambisonic rainforest installation, and accompanying vinyl LP of the sounds of 5AM and 5PM in the primary rainforest.In August 2021 Ecological Ambisonic Recording 002 was installed outdoors in the ‘quartiers des spectacles’ as part of MUTEK MONTREAL 2021 and in June of 2022 Ecological Ambisonic Recording 003 was installed outdoors on St Laurent street within the Mercedes Benz Innovation Zone for MURAL festival 2022.In March 2020, James alongside Ian Cameron and Guillaume Sabourin launched TRANSMISSION, a new and immersive Montreal based portal for the digestion of Canadian and International audio visual artistic work.
