A native of Chicago and long-time resident of Ann Arbor, Michigan, I have more than thirty years university teaching experience and hold the Glenn McGeoch Collegiate Professorship in Music. I have received awards from the University of Michigan, the Mellon Foundation, the CIC (Committee on Institutional Cooperation), the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts, the American Council of Learned Societies, and the Fulbright-Hays Fellowship. At the University of Michigan I have served as associate dean for graduate studies (seven years) and chair of the Department of Musicology (another seven). Recent publications have concerned rituals and chants for medieval services for the consecration of virgins (nuns). Current projects include a book on the medieval and early modern pontifical, a service book for bishops. In private life I have been an Aikido practitioner for nearly two decades and am honored to be a certified assistant instructor (Fukushidoin) in Birankai North America. http://www.birankai.org/For fun, I play the guitar and after fifty years I’m still practicing to master a variety of acoustic and electric playing styles.
