Ascension Michigan is comprised of 15 hospitals, 1 substance abuse recovery center, 3 ambulatory surgery centers, 2 stand-alone emergency departments, and approx. 150 ambulatory healthcare clinics. This position is a member of the national safety management team, that has responsibility and accountability for coordinating, collecting, disseminating, and intervening in a manner that anticipates, prevents, and identifies, evaluates, and controls hazards, as well as assisting during activation of a facility Incident Command Team. The Regional Director, Emergency Management, EC, and Safety maintains continuous survey readiness through compliance with regulations from a number of regulatory agencies, including The Joint Commission (TJC), the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and identified industry best management practices (BMP). This is a leadership position within the Ascension Michigan market with 9 direct reports. In this position our team has successfully participated in 15 Joint Commission triennial surveys, multiple randomized MIOSHA audits, and multiple CMS audits. We have also managed numerous emergency management incidents including mass causality incidents, flooding (water intrusions), fires, power outages, communication outages, polar vortex, loss of HVAC, loss of steam generation, shooting on campus, pandemic (COVID 19), mass vaccination clinics, and fatality investigations. I have also been involved with the development of a Pre-Construction Risk Assessments (PCRAs), Construction Safety Rounding, and building design.

My role with Consumers Energy was within Corporate Safety and Health and I was responsible for leading the integration of the Incident Command System, Incident Action Planning, and other core capabilities into the Company’s incident response preparedness. These efforts included, but were not limited to, the creation of emergency plans, policies and procedures, development of supporting trainings, and design, facilitation, evaluation of related exercises to sustain and improve the Company’s capabilities to respond to all hazards, and dashboard development to manage all of the active projects with the company's strategy and priorities. This role also included the supervision of emergency management technical writer/support role. One of my most notable projects was the refinement of the Incident Command System for a statewide company for electric restoration after severe weather/ storm response. This project was instrumental to the company's success with the safe deployment of electric restoration crews in the summer of 2017; which was the largest mutual assistance response/ support to the state of Florida and Georgia for their response to Hurricane Irma.

In this role, I was responsible for a team of professionals where we supported the development, implementation, and sustainment of the organizations’ emergency management and environment of care/ life safety programs. A successful emergency management program is about the ability to coordinate with others, including internal employees and external key community leaders and agencies, as well as the ability to promote proactive healthcare choices. Being able to deliver safe patient care cannot occur unless the environment in which the care is being delivered is free of safety hazards. I was responsible to ensure that the environment is free of those hazards, by conducting proactive safety surveys, listening to the concerns of employees, patients, and visitors, and chairing the facility’s safety committee and emergency management committee. Through the use of workplace safety/emergency standards (OSHA, NIOSH, ANSI, MIOSHA, NFPA, NIMS, and others) I directed the development and updates to all of our organizational policies and procedures. Part of policy development was also developing the training and exercising programs that supported these new efforts or sustaining best practices. In this role I directed three of the largest responses to incidents/ disasters that the hospital has had to date (Prolonged Power Outage/ HVAC Failure, and Internal Flooding (+$5,000,000 loss)). In addition this position had a special interest in Utility and Construction Management with the development of the construction application (ICRA/ILSM, and Patient Safety Assessments); as built life safety drawings, one line drawings, utility system and components risk assessments, and the implementation of a innovative comprehensive predictive maintenance system.

As the emergency management director for Mecosta County, I was responsible for developing the jurisdiction’s emergency management program including the protection from, preparedness for, response to, recovery from, and mitigation of the hazards that affected Mecosta County and surrounding communities. Activities included the development of the jurisdictions’ emergency operations plan, management of the emergency operation center, coordination with elected and appointed officials, community agencies, and private industry. I was also responsible for coordinating the efforts of Mecosta County’s emergency management program with other jurisdictions within West Michigan as well as the rest of the State of Michigan. This position was all about the ability to build community based relationships and partnerships to continuously improve emergency preparedness throughout the community.

In this role, I was responsible for regional homeland security planning coordination for four counties in West/Central Michigan. I was charged with the creation of templates relating to regional plans as well as the complete implementation of the Regional Response Coordination Framework, Regional Animal Response Plan, and the Regional Medical Coordination Framework.
