My Mother taught me early on to be good at whatever I would put my hand to and seek a high degree of excellence. At 12 years of age, I got a job working for a black businessperson and entrepreneur, working in his store stocking shelves, waiting on customers, and any other task I had to carry out, which I completed with deep satisfaction. The blessing of working for this good man from the age of 12 to 16 is that it placed me in the company of black doctors, professional businessmen, and educators from all walks of life, providing me the life interaction material to harness a diverse world view, aside from the social, educational, financially marginalized community in which I grew up in. I have always been curious, seeking to understand myself and the world. After an eclectic working career void of “Purpose,” I find myself at the precipice of career transition, seeking to understand the inner workings of the human psyche. The science of psychology has always intrigued me about the nature and development of human thoughts, behaviors, and emotions, individually and at societal levels. As a psychologist, I am tasked with the responsibility of providing effective supporting health and well-being treatment modalities and interventions that contribute to the alleviation of suffering for at-risk, marginalized communities exposed to race-based traumatic stress (RBTS) that are increasingly demonstrating elevated symptoms of mental disorders, resulting from racial bias and ethnic discrimination, yet are unable to receive no psychological treatment due to limited resources, stigmatization and most notably in this post-pandemic world facing crisis of unprecedented proportion, and a lack of Psychology healthcare providers. To this end, my practice will employ a genuinely holistic approach to the biological and social environmental determinants that build upon the concept of the “social gradient,” Individuals with lower social status experience more significant health risks and lower life expectancy. I hope to establish a multicultural and racial trauma practice that will work toward creating an open, culturally affirming, and empowered space for people of black, brown, and all peoples to heal from racialized trauma in all of its dynamically ever-changing forms.
