Mental Health Advocate
CurrentAt Rethink Mental Health I have taken up the role as a Multidisciplinary Mental Health Advocate. Whilst I have adopted skills and experience from previous roles as well as the theoretical underpinnings through my academics, advocacy has provided another dimension to my understanding of support provided to service-users in the community by focusing on how mental health services work in conjunction with the Mental Health Act and the Mental Capacity Act. As a Multidisciplinary Mental Health Advocate, I have taken the responsibility of supporting various service-users in a multitude of supportive environments, including forensic wards, disorder specific wards as well as child and adolescent wards. It is here that I empower service-users by making them aware of what they are entitled to under the Mental Health Act and help them have their voice heard. This can involve challenging and appealing the section as well as attending ward rounds. Moreover, within this role I have experience adopted a client-led approach. As of February I have become the lead advocate in managing cases under the Mental Health Act across five different hospitals within the area’s the service is focused in.
