The LIFE Arcipelagu Garnija project's main objective is to secure the Maltese islands as a breeding colony for Yelkouan shearwater. By identifying the key threats which affect the Yelkouan shearwater, appropriate conservation strategies will then be prepared and implemented, securing the main colonies.This will include:– Looking at the risk of Alien Invasive Species, littering and the implementation of predator control and invasive rodent removal for protection the of eggs and chicks which are vulnerable to rat predation– The project will also work towards significantly reducing light pollution from Cirkewwa Ferry Terminal, which is situated close to three Yelkouan colonies causing disturbance to the birds– Tackling the effects of bunkering (ship fuelling) in close proximity to colonies and other maritime threats causing disturbance, from recreational boat owners and boat trip operators– Lastly, raising public awareness about these secretive seabirds to gain strong support from the Maltese population making the Yelkouan Shearwater a mascot for the protection and management of Malta’s coastal nature sites, many of them Natura 2000 sites, to which these seabirds come back every year to breedThe conservation actions will then be monitored at the top priority sites throughout the duration of the project.

Main duties:Seabirds research - Several long term research projects on the islands' breeding seabird populations. Monitoring productivity of resident species, including; Puffin, Arctic tern, Shag, and Eider.Deployment of geo-locators on adult Arctic terns.Habitat conservation - Maintain a suitable breeding habitat for the nesting seabirds. Vegetation control and habitat enrichment.Visitor work - Engage with and educate visitors to the islands. Promote the work of the National Trust

Isle Of May Nnr

I have completed two seasons as a voluntary field research assistant with the long term seabird study group on the Isle of May. The major focus of the research group is the effect of environmental change, principally climate change, on the breeding seabirds. During my time in this role, I have gained experience in handling and ringing a number of different seabird species. I have also assisted with dietary analysis, population surveys, parasite load determination, resighting of adults with coloured darvics, and behavioural observations.

My responsibilities as the long term residential volunteer were focused on the conservation of seabird populations on the island. Working with experienced reserve mangers on a daily basis allowed me to develop skills in ecological surveys and wildlife identification. My time on the Isle of May granted me a deep understanding of the demands of working within an island environment.I gained experience in the handling and ringing of a variety of seabird species. Taking part in various surveys and counts of the seabird populations allowed me to develop my skills in wildlife conservation.I produced the 2015 annual Arctic tern report, a document detailing the productivity of the breeding population that influences future management decisions on the island.A further aspect of the volunteer role was interacting with the members of the public visiting the island, a part of the job I found particularly rewarding.

Volunteering with the RSPB opened my eyes as to how important working with the public isin conservation, especially for NGOsResponsibilities in this volunteer role were centered around engaging with visitors to the site. Informing them on the state of the wildlife, as well as the ongoing projects on the reserve. Helping to organise educational days for visiting school groups developed my teaching and speaking skills. Working closely with the reserve manager gave me a close look into the everyday running of a reserve and the importance of working with other organisations.
