Software Manager
I lead a team of engineers who develop the software for the Inertial Navigation System (INS) products. https://www.advancednavigation.com/inertial-navigation-systems/I have 10+ engineers reporting to me. I provide ongoing coaching, hold regular 1:1s, work with them to set clear goals and provide formal feedback every quarter. The INS software team includes algorithm engineers researching new approaches for sensor fusion and embedded engineers implementing efficient, reliable real-time solutions. I've recruited five new engineers to increase the team to thirteen, promoted four top performers and managed out one person. I've introduced agile processes via Scrum and kept it lightweight with small teams holding short and efficient meetings. The key benefits have been:- reducing WIP as the team collaborates to complete sprint tasks- more predictable delivery through the use of story point estimation and team velocity calculation. I've prioritised a new automated testing capability that provides fast and repeatable testing using recorded real-world data. Within INS we are developing a new cutting-edge sensor: the Digital Fibre Optic Gyroscope (DFOG). This involves collaboration across hardware, optics, FPGA, production and software. The resulting Boreas product can detect the rate of the earth spinning and use that to determine heading (a process known as gyro-compassing).(INS background)INS products are an integral component of autonomous vehicles as they provide highly accurate information needed for navigation such as where you are, how fast you are travelling and what direction you are heading. This is done by combining multiple sensors such as accelerometers and gyroscopes along with satellite navigation in a process called sensor fusion.

Senior Dsp Engineer
I worked on sound processing to improve the lives of people with profound hearing loss. This included the decoding and resampling of audio streamed from phones and wireless accessories, and firmware for Kanso - the first Cochlear off-the-ear processor.

At Cambridge Mechatronics, I was the DSP engineer in a small team that developed a novel loudspeaker technology that formed controllable beams of sound.
