About James Downs

After working as an independent researcher, museum curatorial assistant, monastic archivist and rare book librarian, I completed a doctoral thesis entitled 'Ministers of "the Black Art": the engagement of British clergy with photography, 1839-1914', for which I was awarded a Ph.D in 2019. Having worked in the University of Exeter in various capacities since 2009, including in the Bill Douglas Cinema Museum and Special Collections, I was appointed Archivist of the Middle East Collections in August 2018, and Project Manager for the Digital Archive of the Middle East (DAME) in October 2021, in addition to my responsibilities looking after the Arab World Documentation Unit (AWDU), which has recently (September 2022) relocated to the Institute for Arab and Islamic Studies. My research continues to explore various aspects of visual culture - including both the history of photography and film studies - as well as a range of topics relating to the SWANA region, religious history, media archaeology, book illustration, postcard collecting, Victorian curios, antiquarian ephemera, Gulf studies, Arabic print and manuscript history, Islamic visual culture and architecture. Posts on a wide range of these topics can be found on my website www.darklanecreative.com.
