Our legacy can be greater than our influences during this lifetime, a life that the Bible describes —somewhat solemnly— as a mere ‘mist’ which appears for a while and then disappears. My ‘mist’ has largely been about cycles of success tempered by adversity and sometimes failure. It’s not easy but I don’t count the failures as losses, rather ‘rungs’ on the ladder-of-insurance-against-future-failures. There’s no substitute for intuition honed by failure, and it’s a thing no-one can teach!Challenges are obligatory in my home country. Simply raising a family in Zimbabwe has been taxing to say the least, let alone steering businesses through the most turbulent economic instances in modern history. In the 2000’s I literally watched an entire economy being deconstructed; an experience that has led me to a good understanding of macro-economics. A youthful passion for cars and anything mechanical initiated my work life. Although adept with my hands, Technical training helped me realise my active mind detested the mundane work of fixing things. In my twenties, after working in agriculture in Australia, tourism in Britain and with my constant desire to learn, I determined the broad scope of the mining industry would be a good fit. I joined my geologist father in his own exploration company and my interest in mining developed from there. I love chasing mineral resources, but prefer a highly pragmatic/methodical approach to exploration and mining whilst remaining flexible to the dictates of new information. I love anything to do with machinery and innovation. I may appear overly-cautious and restrained when it comes to business, especially with the challenges and pitfalls of the developing world, but I'm actually an optimist, just a deeply analytical one!I’m known for my attention to detail and no-nonsense approach to getting things done to a high standard. I hope that in that whatever I do I will do it well enough that when my ‘mist’ settles it will water the grass and benefit others, long after I’m gone! Senior ManagerCommoner Mine 2016 - 2019ZimbabweThe gold mining operations which I managed at Commoner and Bee Mines were primarily owned by British investors. When I started in 2016 the pit was still in the initial planning stages. Bee Mine was of marginal viability given it had been largely mined-out as a pre-WW2 underground mine. The challenge was to keep costs low and ore-dilution at a bare minimum to ensure viability, and this we were able to do till the end of the mine's life. Closure was neccessitated when the in-situ grade dipped below 1g/t on the periphery with a gold price of only $1300/Oz. The orebody was a gently folded seam or supergene permeated by a series of shears of slightly elevated grade. The operation was relatively small at +/-250 tpd and employed 50+ regular contract workers and a small on-site management compliment. The process plant, some 8km from the pit, included leach tanks/carbon columns, crushers/Ball mill/CIL/etc, pilot static leach plant. The job included an exploration project and rehabilitation of an underground mine on-site.
