Jim Durden, was a twenty-seven-year veteran of the Florida Highway Patrol. Jim rose to the rank of Lieutenant of the Special Operations District which encompasses the traffic homicide, motorcycle unit, and K9 drug interdiction squads in Miami. He was responsible for instruction of the new computer based crash reporting system and was also an instructor for crash diagrams. JIm developed a computer program to track crashes in the tri-county area to determine causation of traffic crashes. This led to his 10-year study of traffic crashes in the Miami area to determine where they occurred and what the contributing causes were. Based on his extensive study of traffic crash causation and contributing factors, the Florida Highway Patrol realigned zones and shift schedules to more efficiently handle crashes in the Miami area. During his career he received special training in crash investigations including traffic homicide investigations. His knowledge of traffic-related issues on major roadways in the Miami area is unrivaled.
