Dr. James M. Ecklund is the Medical Director, Neurosciences, Inova Health System and Chairman of the Department of Neurosciences at Inova Fairfax Hospital, Virginia’s largest Trauma Center. Prior to coming to Inova in 2007, he served the last 10 years as Professor and Chairman of the Neurosurgery Program of the National Capital Consortium which includes Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., National Naval Medical Center and Uniformed Services University. He obtained his undergraduate education at the United States Military Academy at West Point, attended medical school at the Uniformed Services University and completed neurosurgical residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in 1993. Dr. Ecklund is a general neurosurgeon with primary interests in neurotrauma, complex spine, and cerebrovascular disease. Until retirement, he held the rank of COL in the U.S Army, and was deployed as a Neurosurgeon to both Afghanistan and Iraq. His Neurosurgery Program received the vast majority of the American neurotrauma casualties from the Global War on Terrorism. He is the Chairman of the Board for the Hugh and Carolyn Shelton Military Neurotrauma Foundation. He has also served on multiple oversight and advisory boards including the Veterans Administration, Department of Defense, NATO, Neurotrauma Foundation, Brain Trauma Foundation and the NFL Players Association Mackey White Concussion Committee. In 2011, at the request of the Supreme Allied Commander Europe, via Project Hope, he gave presentations to the members of Ministries of Defense in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania on Blast Induced Brain Injury and Advanced Prosthetic Technology to Optimize Functional Restoration. Dr. Ecklund has over 100 publications and abstracts and has lectured throughout the world.
