James Farley is an Australian artist and teacher based in North Carolina. Combining photography with ecological thinking, James collaborates with people and places to explore interconnection and reciprocal relationships with environments and how these can shape individual and collective identities. His work is often presented in books, series, or installations.James is a passionate advocate for education and creative communities. He works with people of all ages and abilities and has taught in universities and public and private schools. James provides bespoke education as a private tutor and coordinates photography training and creative practice projects for corporate and community partners. James has co-founded three artist-run initiatives and has facilitated many successful professional development, mentorship, and community-building programs. James has received multiple awards, prizes, and grants, including project funding from the NSW Office of Regional Youth to deliver a 12-month youth photography program in isolated communities (2022-23), CreateNSW funds for a collaborative professional development program for emerging artists (2020), funds to undertake a curatorial mentorship at Art Gallery of NSW (2019), Artist Support Funding for a collaborative publication (2018), and a Young Regional Artist Scholarship to undertake multiple residencies in the Far West of NSW (2015). In 2015, James was awarded the NSW/ACT Young Achiever of the Year Award (Arts).
