The Clayton, NC plant was the first Caterpillar facility to achieve this recognition. As a result of the Class A initiative, the overall assembly defect rate dropped by 26%, daily build compliance was raised by 15%, and on time commercial ships have been at 100% to the present. Accomplishments:•Worked with over 60 suppliers to reduce lead times on components. The overall plant lead-time average was reduced from 43 days to 20 days with a savings of $3 million in component inventory in 1999. •Planned departmental budgets for assembly teams with overall responsibility for the operations roll up. Successfully reduced indirect materials expense by 12% from 1998-2000.
