Just as you’re an expert in your field, I’m expert in mine. As a professional wordsmith, I know how to dream up engaging ideas and talk to your customers in their language. And I can do it as much as you want, without taking up your precious time.Focus → I enjoy the power of communication both in my work and personal relationships. That, customers say, makes me easy to work with: proactive when it comes to ideas and planning; reactive when it’s required. I’ve spent the best part of three decades hitting tight deadlines. The key is to be organised enough to have the bandwidth to concentrate on last-minute requests. I don’t bother clients with unnecessary questions. I just get on with the work, supplying it on time, every time.Channels → My pedigree is in award-winning automotive journalism so I know what I’m writing about. One of the many things my 30 years in the industry has taught me is how to use words written and spoken – across different comms channels to reap rewards for organisations. As a French speaker, I also translate marketing material, press releases, social media posts and executive speeches into English for DS Automobiles. Happy to talk → Message me on LinkedIn, send an email to James@wordsmithmedia.co.uk or maybe just go old skool and pick up the phone: 07980 802205.

Cars ColumnistThe Telegraph Oct 2012 - PresentLondonFreelance writing consumer and lifestyle focused stories. I also write advertorials for the Daily Telegraph on non-clashing topics. -
FounderAsk The Car Expert Dec 2018 - Oct 2024After being told by a newspaper editor (who didn’t drive) that no one was interested in consumer motoring advice, I started AsktheCarExpert.com. The growing number of site views (>10k/month) proved I was right. The focus was to provide advice for normal (non-motoring) people on the everyday problems they might encounter with motoring or their car. The website was a steep learning curve: understanding how to provide the best content/website to satisfy the search engines.I worked with an SEO specialist on this project which gave me expert first-hand insight into how the internet works. With no paid-for spend behind it, any growth was organic. Until it wasn't... And after six years, when it wasn't going anywhere near the direction I'd hoped, I called it a day.

Managing DirectorSquarejames Ltd Jul 2011 - Sep 2018West Sussex/LondonSquareJames was a specialist provider of branded content, for print and digital/social media. Company strengths included creative strategy consultation, content creation (traditional editorial and film), and content management. Clients included breakdown and insurance companies, tyre and motor manufacturers.I’m a highly organised and motivated creative thinker. My adaptable writing style has been developed through a career working on broadsheet and tabloid newspapers. But journalism is about so much more than simply writing, hence SquareJames being the logical next step. During my career I’ve learned to brief for and organise complicated events from scratch, to ensure that they make money while remaining affordable for clients, to deal with suppliers and colleagues, and to work a manageable schedule. And then there are the creative ideas that underpin them.
