I currently serve as EVP Population Based Care & Chief Financial Officer at MultiCare Health System in Tacoma, WA. MHS is a not-for-profit health care organization that’s been caring for communities in Washington since 1882. With more than 20,000 team members, we are the largest, not-for-profit, community-based, locally-owned health system in the state of Washington. In this role, I am responsible for improving the health of our population in a financially feasible way. In the United States, we spend more money than any other country in healthcare, yet our outcomes are not among the best. We can and have to do better by reducing our total expenditure while improving outcomes. The sustainability of our healthcare system is important for every individual, business, and our country. As a healthcare leader, I have two primary goals: 1) To lead an organization in improving the health of its communities.2) To help my team achieve their full potential. Improving health is very complex work. I enjoy the challenge of breaking down complex problems to better understand them and find solutions. Progress can be slow, impatience often gets in the way, and quick solutions are tempting. But, when a complex problem is solved, the outcome is well worth the effort. I am also deeply committed to developing the full potential of my team. I have been privileged to work with so many talented and motivated individuals. I find it incredibly rewarding to help my team members grow, sometimes beyond what they even thought possible. While serving as a leader at Adventist HealthCare for over 20 years, I had the opportunity to improve community health and grow talent. We successfully relocated a 100-year legacy hospital into a 21st modern building. I coached several of my team members who grew into key leadership roles within the organization, including succeeding me. In my last few weeks at Adventist HealthCare, I heard from many leaders on the impact I had in their development. There is nothing more humbling and rewarding than learning how small gestures can make a large impact on future leaders. Speaking of future leaders, my two young daughters take up most of my free time, as my wife and I find ways to keep them active and learning. We love traveling, seeing family and attending sporting events, especially baseball games. We are going through unprecedented challenges in the world and in healthcare. How we respond will have a significant impact on our country’s future, and I look forward to working along side you in leaving a better future to our children.
