I'm a graphic designer with a vast wealth of knowledge regarding printing, reprographics and design. You can view a brief history of my storied career to date by reading below.• Started at an early age with a flair for potato printing• Did a spectacularly good screen printed T-shirt of Freddie Mercury in college. Some might say my subconscious was pushing me to a career in print, but in reality I was just a huge fan of Queen.• I later worked for numerous printers, starting my career in a backstreet cowboy outfit, where, due to their general tight fisted approach and lack of vision, I began learning the old fashioned way of doing things for litho prints, using paste up and negatives. I eventually trained as a Mac Operator at the same time, as well as spending time on the printing presses and print finishing, giving me knowledge of the complete printing process/working as cheap labour wherever they told me.• From there I moved to another company which specialised in reprographics, ensuring I was fully trained in how to check and prepare artwork for printing on litho, gravure and silk screen. After months of measuring type and ink bleed on things like shampoo bottles, I left shortly before I lost the will to live.• After a couple of years of that tedium, I joined a litho printers, who then bought a second unit specialising in plastics and packaging. Because of my previous experience and refusal to take orders from anyone else, I was promoted to studio manager.• In 2005 I set up on my own, armed with a pretty full overview of printing and artwork in general. I also became my own boss, which was much better than being watched over.• I also interview rock stars in my role as writer for Fireworks Magazine, allowing me to shamelessly name drop - like the time I sat talking with Ronnie Wood.• After ten years of working for myself, I formed Halographic, a partnership which continues to offer staggeringly well priced high quality print and design: www.halo-graphic.com

DesignerSolitary Vision Aug 2005 - PresentHullFreelance graphic design offering top notch artwork with a lovely, affable gentleman who will bend over backwards to do a good job and try and make the experience enjoyable for all concerned. Alternatively, if you prefer me to work in miserable silence, I can do that too."James come onboard at Fireworks Magazine for issue 15 after our previous designer decided to leave, and the leap in quality was immediately apparent. Not only does James have an eye for visual flair and aesthetically pleasing layouts, his work-rate is second to none, consistently on time and always willing to turn in that extra bit of work at the last minute without as much as a moan. And to top that off, he’s also a great person and a committed team player. I’d have no hesitation in recommending James’ work to anyone, and would happily provide any references required or discuss further." Bruce MeePublisher/Editor, Fireworks Magazine UKwww.rocktopia.co.uk • fireworks.mag@ntlworld.com"We run the Michael Ball Fan Club and when James asked us if we were interested in having a look at what he could do with our magazine we thought why not. Well, we were astounded with what he came up with. We’ve come on in leaps and bounds in the years that James has been working for us and would definitely recommend him to anyone. We’re at the stage where we just know that whatever we ask him to do it will be outstanding. We just send the content through to him and the design/layout comes back to us incredibly quick. There have been times when we’ve had to send News Updates out within a day and he’s never said "Sorry, can’t do that". We’re more than happy to provide examples of our magazine if required."
