• Collaborated with graduate students to investigate the effects of embryonic chronic hypoxia exposure on the metabolism, heart contractility, and blood shunting in alligators and snapping turtles. • Research resulted in published scientific papers and a poster on the contractility study at the Society of Experimental Biology conference in Italy, 2018. Details:• Investigated effects of embryonic chronic hypoxia exposure at 70% and 90% development. Surgically removed and isolated embryonic alligator heart ventricles and then ran experiments with them to measure differences in contraction. Findings showed that chronic hypoxia appeared to precondition the hearts to better cope with acute hypoxic stress.• Successfully calculated embryonic alligator metabolic rates by measuring O2 consumption and CO2 production. Generated setup of connected glass jars containing alligator eggs and determined respective gas differences over time. • Helped feed, clean, tag, maintain, and monitor over 100+ alligators/snapping turtles (and their eggs) year-round (including holidays).• Updated lab methods by creating laminated book of alligator embryo images and descriptions at various stages of development.
