• Collaborated with graduate students to investigate the effects of embryonic chronic hypoxia exposure on the metabolism, heart contractility, and blood shunting in alligators and snapping turtles. • Research resulted in published scientific papers and a poster on the contractility study at the Society of Experimental Biology conference in Italy, 2018. Details:• Investigated effects of embryonic chronic hypoxia exposure at 70% and 90% development. Surgically removed and isolated embryonic alligator heart ventricles and then ran experiments with them to measure differences in contraction. Findings showed that chronic hypoxia appeared to precondition the hearts to better cope with acute hypoxic stress.• Successfully calculated embryonic alligator metabolic rates by measuring O2 consumption and CO2 production.
