About James Harris

I am an engineering leader who works at the intersection of mechanical hardware, electronics and software to make complex systems work. I just joined the team at Relativity Space and I’m looking forward to seeing how we can use additive manufacturing to change the way rockets are designed and built. Before that, I led the motion control systems engineering team at Waymo for about a year. Prior to that, I ran the team responsible for ground testing at Blue Origin. My team brought all the systems together, worked out issues with functionality and interfaces and got the vehicle ready for flight. I was the Flight Controller for the first successful mission of the New Shepard suborbital vehicle. For the last few years I have been an engineering manager and I really enjoy mentoring and teaching young engineers and establishing processes for my team to be successful and deliver consistently high quality work.

James Harris Work Experience Details
  • Relativity Space
    Vice President Of Propulsion Engineering
Relativity Space Aug 2024 - Present
    Long Beach, California, United States
  • Relativity Space
    Senior Director Of Propulsion
    Relativity Space Aug 2023 - Aug 2024
    Long Beach, California, United States
  • Relativity Space
    Chief Engineer, Terran 1
    Relativity Space Dec 2021 - Jul 2023
    Long Beach, California, United States
My team and I look across subsystems and across the vehicle life cycle to make sure what we're designing and building adds up to the rocket we want to fly. We worked closely with the design, integration and operations teams to ensure smooth and successful testing, focus attention on the key technical challenges, and set the entrance and exit criteria for major milestones and test campaigns. We managed all technical risks and the overall flight readiness process. I was the on console Chief Engineer for 1st stage testing, static fire, and the first launch of the Terran 1 vehicle.
  • Relativity Space
    Vehicle Responsible Engineer
    Relativity Space Feb 2020 - Dec 2021
    Los Angeles, California, United States
Part project manager, part systems engineer, part firefighter. Focus on subsystem integration, testing, and operations.
  • Relativity Space
    Second Stage Responsible Engineer
    Relativity Space Sep 2018 - Feb 2020
  • Waymo
    Motion Control Systems Engineering Lead
    Waymo Mar 2017 - Aug 2018
My team is responsible for architecture, requirements development, integration and verification of the motion control systems for Waymo's autonomous vehicles. We work with industry partners and internal teams to design and implement motion control subsystems that support the performance, robustness and fault tolerance requirements of the vehicle. We are also responsible for verification and readiness of those systems.
  • Blue Origin
New Glenn Mission Ops Deputy Element Lead
    Blue Origin Nov 2016 - Mar 2017
    Kent, Washington
    - Supported program and technical management of the launch operations segment of an orbital launch program during concept and preliminary design- Created templates of linked schedules and budgets for subsystem owners to ensure consistency across subsystems and minimize duplicated efforts- Defined an architecture with detailed use cases for ground system software to execute launch sequences and other operations
  • Blue Origin
    Integrated Test Operations Lead
    Blue Origin Nov 2013 - Nov 2016
    Seattle, Washington
My team is responsible for the verification and acceptance testing performed on each flight vehicle prior to flight. We plan the tests, write the procedures, then execute the tests. During testing we typically act as the engineer with overall responsibility for the test and / or as the console operator controlling the launch vehicle and ground systems required to complete the test. The team is heavily involved in the development of vehicle launch procedures and we support our launch operations team both on site and remotely to get the vehicle processed and flown.
