My assignment was undertaken in the context and framework of the United Nations Social Development Goal of Good Health and Well Being. Specifically, it is intended that efforts aimed at regulation and tobacco control in Indonesia will reduce the incidence of non-communicable diseases, as well as household economic difficulties and income loss from illness or premature mortality that are attributable to cigarette smoking and tobacco use. The organisation I worked for, the Muhammadiyah Tobacco Control Center (MTCC), was also attempting to bring about change to institute smoke-free area regulations preventing cigarette smoking in public areas, as well as ban on the sponsorship and advertising of tobacco. MTCC is funded and supported by the Muhammadiyah network, Indonesia, as well as the Bloomberg Foundation and the Intentional Union Against Lung Disease. In my role, I completed a review of literature on the use of tobacco taxation policy to inform tobacco pricing, and assisted in the development of media releases for English-speaking audiences and research protocols. Further, I was involved in monitoring and evaluation activities of the implementation of smoke-free area regulation in Java, Indonesia as well as data collection and analysis. To this end, I undertook an international literature review of the outcome of smoke-free area regulations. Show less
