Associate Professor James Herbert is a social researcher and evaluator focused on the development, implementation, and delivery of effective social programs. In particular his research focuses on the interaction of criminal justice, child protection, and mental health systems in responding to children affected by abuse, and characteristics of successful collaborations across sectors. He is currently undertaking research on addressing barriers to therapy engagement for children that have disclosed sexual abuse and multi-agency assessments of child abuse risk. Working across child and family safety fields, Assoc Prof Herbert also has a key interest in the translation of research evidence into policy and practice change and building the capacity of the sector to apply evaluative thinking to complex social policy issues. His work is responsive to the challenges of human service delivery and aim of supporting evidence-based policy and practice in the sector. This approach is framed by an underlying principle of preventing abuse and addressing the effects of abuse through a public health approach to child abuse and neglect. Key career impacts include informing the adoption of a new standard practice response to child sexual abuse in Western Australia through the completion of an industry led research project, driving change to the NSW Out of Home Care data framework through a review of NGO provided care, and contributing to a major report in New South Wales that changed the approach to cross-agency sexual assault responses.
