Toxicologist/Research ScientistMinnesota Department Of Health Mar 2013 - Dec 2014Saint Paul, MnJames Jacobus is a toxicologist in the Health Risk Assessment Unit of the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH), working on drinking water contaminants of emerging concern. He leads a special project at MDH to understand the occurrence and health risks from unregulated naturally-occurring radionuclides found in Minnesota’s groundwater, such as polonium-210. Prior to joining MDH, Dr. Jacobus conducted research on polychlorinated biphenyls and low dose, low and high linear energy transfer ionizing radiation.James has pre-doctoral experience as an environmental scientist for a private firm engaged in the remediation of leaking underground storage tanks, and also performed outreach for the University of Wisconsin-Extension (Soil Science). He earned his doctorate in Human Toxicology from the University of Iowa (2009), supported by the Iowa Superfund Basic Research Program, and trained as an NIH T-32 postdoctoral fellow with the University of Iowa’s Free Radical and Radiation Biology program within the Carver College of Medicine (2010-2013). Dr. Jacobus also holds an adjunct faculty appointment in the Division of Environmental Health Sciences at the University of Minnesota.
