About James K Utterback, Ph.D.

Hello! I'm James, a scientist and musician.I'm a CNRS Research Fellow in Paris. I am interested in working on complex problems in physical chemistry and thermal physics, combining advanced optical spectroscopy with modeling.I research fundamental problems in nanoscience relevant to optoelectronics. In my postdoctoral research, I used pump-probe microscopy to study nanoscale energy transport and in-situ SAXS to track self assembly in nanoparticle superlattices. In my PhD research, I used ultrafast laser spectroscopy as well as analytical modeling and simulations to study excited-state dynamics in nanocrystal–catalyst complexes that utilize light as an energy source to drive chemical reactions. Today my independent group we are applying advanced spectroscopy to study photodynamics under more realistic optoelectronics conditions to account for transient heating, defects and interfaces.Music is my main passion outside of science. My rock music project, Fire Whale, consists of solo home-recordings chipped away at ever since 2003 in my spare time, but it occupies much of the core of my mind and curiosity about the world.

  • University Of Oregon
    Undergraduate Research Assistant
    University Of Oregon 2007 - 2011
    Eugene, Oregon
Advisor: Prof. Andrew H. Marcus, Department of ChemistryGoldwater ScholarI used a novel optical technique called Fourier imaging correlation spectroscopy, a technique in which two circularly polarized laser beams are interfered at the sample plane of a fluorescence microscope, and the phase- and polarization-dependant fluorescence emitted by the sample is detected as the time-resolved signal. The purpose of my research was to obtain information that can elucidate the mechanism of structural relaxations in glass-forming polymer liquids by directly observing nanoparticle motions.
