Innovation Fellow
I'm working on testing of silicon detector hardware in association with NPL. This position was made possible due to exceptional funding applied for by the research group on my behalf to keep me.Protons offer many advantages over x-rays for use in radiatherapy to treat tumours. The technologies needed are less developed and the University of Birmingham is making a large contribution to improve this. We have a number of silicon sensors constructed using new techniques to make them resistant to the effects of radiation. The device I am testing is expected to sit in the beamline (in between the radiation source and the patient) to measure what dose has been delivered and therefore must be able to withstand the effects of years of radiation damage.I'm currently characterising the response of the device (using photon transfer curves) and plan to measure how this changes as it is exposed to proton radiation using the Birmingham MC40 cyclotron. My responsibilities include:- Developing hardware and techniques for measuring the device performance- Developing python code for analysis of the data recorded- Meeting and communicating with the manufacturer of the sensor- Supervision of MSci & PhD students- Assisting with other experimental hardware work- Relevant H&S training, including a nationally recognised certificate
Indoor Cycling Instructor
I ran a regular spin class for university sports clubs and cover classes for the general public. I am responsible for planning the sessions and delivering them, making sure that everything runs smoothly and safely. I have to motivate the classes (up to ~30 people) to work hard for around an hour.
Postgraduate Teaching Assistant
I planned and delivered classes to first year undergraduate students as part of the ‘Physics and communications skills’ module. This introduced them to useful techniques, i.e. dimensional analysis, used through their degreesI also taught in laboratory and C++ classes for first and second year undergraduate students. This involved assisting & providing feedback to students during experiments and while writing code and marking assessments. This experience of teaching was extremely enjoyable. It was a great chance to help enthusiastic students in their learning and for me to reflect on what I've learned since being a student on the same modules a few years before.
