Having successfully passed my ICE Professional Review, I have progressed to Senior Engineer level and continue to deliver civil and structural engineering projects, involving the preparation of design calculations, contract drawings and bills of quantities and the supervision of construction, and providing support and mentoring to colleagues.

Having completed several placements as part of the ICE approved training agreement, I secured a permanent position as Assistant Engineer within the Bridges and Structures department. This work has involved carrying out principal inspections of highway bridges, design of maintenance schemes (concrete repair with cathodic protection, masonry parapet replacement, bridge deck widening), on-site supervision of maintenance schemes, design of new structures (for example retaining walls to Eurocode 7) and production of contract documentation for tendered schemes.All work has been within the framework of Devon County Council’s quality management system and the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015. I have gained experience of working to relevant design standards, for example British and European Standards (Eurocodes) and the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges. In taking schemes from feasibility through to construction I have gained an appreciation of the various environmental and ecological constraints associated with such projects, as well as managing and monitoring their budgets and programmes. In delivering schemes that have been either individual tenders or procured through a term maintenance or framework contract I have gained experience of the widely used NEC form of contract.

Under a training agreement approved by the Institution of Civil Engineers, I undertook several placements within the County Council’s Engineering Design Group. This included the Highways Design, Highways Asset Management, Flood Risk Management, and Bridges and Structures departments. This gave me a broad range of experience in the design, maintenance and management of highways and highway structures.

Computer modelling of wastewater asset management projects for the engineering design team. This involved hydraulic modelling of wastewater networks, optioneering, data analysis and preparation of reports.Projects included sewer requisitions, flood alleviation schemes, development assessments and catchment studies.

While looking for a graduate position in civil engineering I found an opportunity at a local mechanical engineering firm as a design draftsman.My role involved producing accurate drawings and parts lists to enable the manufacture of a range of materials handling equipment. This included liaising with Sales Engineers, the Lead Design Engineer and colleagues in the manufacturing department to ensure that the end product matched the client's specification.

The Materials Laboratory carries out investigations into construction materials, mostly for highway construction.Activities involve geotechnical investigations, both on site and on samples taken back to the laboratory; compression testing of concrete cube and core samples; grading of aggregate used for bituminous material and void testing of material used for utility trenches.
