A broad range of trade, economic, and security policy experience in Washington and abroad. Washington assignments included Deputy Assistant Secretary of State in the Bureau of East Asian & Pacific Affairs, Director of East Asian Affairs at the National Security Council (NSC), and Director for China & Japan Trade at the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative's Office (USTR). Service abroad at embassies in Singapore, Beijing, Pretoria, & Bucharest in a range of policy roles, including as Political & Economic Counselor in Singapore and head of the Trade Policy Office in Beijing. Former Commander in the U.S. Navy with active service afloat as a surface warfare officer onboard two combatants in the Pacific Fleet. Reserve service at the Pentagon, Navy Staff (N52) and as Assistant Naval Attache in Romania.

Served as Chief of Staff to the Assistant Secretary and then as one of four Deputy Assistant Secretaries in the Bureau of East Asian & Pacific Affairs (EAP). Responsible for relations with Australia, New Zealand, and 12 Pacific Island nations (ANP), oversaw eight embassies and four constituent posts. Direct management of two EAP offices (ANP Affairs and the Office of Regional & Security Policy Affairs.)

Served concurrently as Director for Australia, New Zealand, and Pacific Island Affairs (ANP) andDirector for Asia Economic Affairs. Coordinated government wide policy related to all facets of U.S. relations with the ANP region. As part of the transition staff from the Bush to Obama Administrations, played a formative role in establishing the latter's Asia policy, including creation of the U.S.-China Strategic & Economic Dialogue, expansion of U.S. engagement with ASEAN, and advancement of the Trans-Pacific Partnership FTA.
