Waurn Ponds Vic

Over the summer of 2014/15 I was involved in a 12 week placement program which allowed exposure to a high paced advanced manufacturing environment. During this period I was placed with a team of process engineers to examine and control the production line in Carbon Revolution’s new factory in Waurn Ponds. Here, high quality Carbon fiber wheels are being manufactured for the automotive industry. Quality control and process improvements were a vital component of the placement. Additionally I was in charge of the development of standard operating procedures and all safety documentation for several pieces of machinery which were commissioned over the summer. Additionally I regularly liaised with electrical contractors and external companies to perform upgrade works throughout the factory and production line. Upon the end of my placement I was offered a causal position.

I performed many tasks for academic staff and PhD students. Heat treatment exercises of alloys and steels are commonly undertaken in this role to meet research objectives. I program furnaces for specific heat treatment processes and I am often involved in steel and aluminum castings. I also undertake cutting and grinding of samples as well as examining structures in a microscopy laboratory. On a regular basis I am involved in team meetings to discuss research objectives and plan for upcoming projects. I currently perform 10 -12 hours a week for the institute.
