About James Mcbreen
Global lead for forest and landscape restoration assessments (ROAM), I support countries, Members, and landscape stakeholders, including governments, private sector, communities, research institutes and NGO’s, to make forest landscape restoration (FLR) actionable. I seek to guide science-based decision-making on landscape restoration by harnessing the power of the IUCN union of Secretariat, Members, expert Commissions, and partnerships to support landscape stakeholders to know better where, how, with what, and with whom to restore degraded and deforested landscapes, and accelerate and scale implementation.Originally from the UK, I lived and worked in South America for thirteen years where, through my work with various international organisations, I supported local empowerment and action towards the multiple wins for nature, climate and people achieved by restoring degraded and deforested landscapes. I hold a BSc. Environmental Science (Hons.), a Master’s degree in Social Environmental Studies specialised in global change, and a post graduate diploma in Economics, with a focus on valuation of tropical forest ecosystems. I am motivated by the opportunity to improve our collective stewardship of social and ecological systems, the services they generate, and relationships among natural capital, human well-being, livelihoods, and poverty. Through restoring degraded and deforested landscapes, I believe we have an unprecedented opportunity to curb degradation; return ecosystems back to healthy, functional states, and harness the potential of resilient forests and landscapes to improve livelihoods and human well-being, and to contribute significantly to addressing the biodiversity and climate change crises. Seventeen years’ experience on the dynamic interactions between nature and society, effectively engaging local, national and international stakeholders on forest conservation and climate change and related issues. I have a proven ability in developing and maintaining productive relationships with government agencies, non-governmental and civil society organisations, indigenous peoples and private sector, to provide technical coordination and leadership to implement projects addressing climate change and sustainable development policies. I have broad experience developing, coordinating and monitoring social and environmental projects at different geographic scales, with a broad range of interested parties.
