If I won the lottery, I'd still want to analyse the surface chemistry of materials. I run the X-ray Photoelectron Spectrometer in Swansea University. It's a fun environment and the day can range from running one-off crazy samples like cuttlefish, to helping students with the minutiae of peak modelling, to trouble shooting why the charge neutraliser is turning itself on & off. The biggest research area is currently perovskite & organic photovoltaics from the scale-up group in the SPECIFIC project. I’m really interested in tying together production processes with some of the advanced techniques available in Swansea (XPS, UPS, mapping & gas cluster ion beam etches).I’m very active out of work too. I’m an elected councillor & political campaigner and I have spoken to hundreds of people about local issues on the doors. I’m a Slimming World stalwart & now regularly run 10km and the Swansea Half marathon. I’m rubbish at French, but I still try as French culture & food is wonderful. I’m also a board game geek at heart.I’ve been lucky to work on some amazing surface science & scale-up projects over the years, and I’m particularly grateful for my first role in Tata Steel RD&T’s Surface Science group. The mentoring there really gave me the confidence to push on as a scientist and now be the “XPS guy” at work.
