My role was very unique as I was both a Receptionist and a Concierge responsible for check-in and check-out of guests and for assisting with tour and restaurant reservations. On check-in I provided a personal experience to the guests by assisting them to their rooms and upselling the hotel facilities. Within this role I also worked at The Dock House which is a 6 bedroom, very upmarket 5 star boutique hotel (a part of Newmark).

Housekeeping - This included working in the laundry room, servicing rooms and replenishing the mini bars. I was also tasked with checking rooms to ensure rooms had been serviced to the required standard. I assisted management in the daily running of the Housekeeping department and stood in for the manager during times when she was not available. Assisted management in checking the newly refurbished rooms ensuring all snags were recorded and contractors advised of the issues.

I worked in the Front of House at 15 On Orange, a new 5 star 129 room hotel in Cape Town’s CBD. My responsibilities included checking guests in and out and assisting the porters with luggage. I also spent 2 weeks working in the reservations department taking telephone and online bookings and managing admin work. I gained Opera experience, a property management system which I subsequently used in the other hotels I worked in.

My first practical assignment was working at the President Hotel in the food and beverage department. Throughout the 3 months I made sure I covered all areas of food and beverage department. My responsibilities consisted of being a terrace/restaurant waiter, performing a variety of table service such taking orders, settling checks and performing closing cash up duties. I also worked in the banqueting section setting up tables for business conferences and weddings. Room service was another area I covered in the food and beverage department. My second practical assignment was also at the President Hotel but working in the Kitchen. Having no previous experience of working in a kitchen, I mainly worked the early morning breakfast shift, working in the hot section, helping to prepare the breakfast buffet. I did spend time working in the cold section, this was mainly preparing fruits and salads. I also worked in the pastry section working closely with the Pastry Chef. Health and safety, cleanliness and hygiene are vital skills that I learnt in the kitchen.
