CurrentPathology is an industry undergoing exciting and even disruptive changes in technology. There are great advances in key laboratory technologies and automation; there are really exciting advances in the miniaturisation of instruments - even to a personal device level; and perhaps most importantly, there are opportunities to move from the direct examination of a specimen to the creation of, and then examination of a digital representation of the specimen.This digital transformation allows very material improvements in efficiency, quality and cost effectiveness of the services we provide. It will allow us to processing specimens at one location and perform diagnostic services at another, breaking down the barriers to providing service in remote locations.Digital representation of specimens will also lead to the ability (with appropriate consent and ethical approval) to apply data analytics across many specimens - I believe that this creates a powerful tool for researchers in turn leading to both direct clinical benefits and public health benefitsSome examples of the many projects in our digital transformation roadmap include:- Mobile access to Pathology results and services- Natural language processing (AI) of medical reports to assist public health reporting- Enhanced Genomics services- Digital Anatomical Pathology- Microbiology Lab AutomationWe are utilising public and private cloud, IOT and the latest integration techniques to enable our transformation.Take a look at our website: http://www.pathology.health.nsw.gov.au
