Designer/ technician of predominantly residential schemes

I have always been interested in seeing how architectural drawings are turned into a built form. When designing any building or space I believe it is important to realise the practicalities of the design along with the conceptual aspects. When designing any building or space I believe it is important to realise the practicalities of the design along with the conceptual aspects. While working closely with a builder (carpenter by trade) I have gained first hand knowledge and experienced the day to day issues that occur on site. I have worked on projects such as extensions and loft conversions from start to finish, including the structural aspect of the building process placing both timber/steel columns and beams into correct positions. During the interim period between my work experience (Part 1) and returning to complete my Part 2, I was made redundant from my Architectural role and found it extremely hard to find any other related work in that climate. I was offered a role on a management scheme which taught me how to run a business. On a daily basis I managed approximately 400 people at any given time and dealt with all aspects of the company, only leaving to return to complete my Part 2.

This served as a very useful time to further develop my capacity in architecture. After experiencing the conceptual aspect of design while working for ORMS, Gibberd’s gave me a new challenge based on the construction side to architecture and has proven a valuable lesson to finally make the fancy conceptual ideas not only work, but work safely.
