Raytheon UK, (also known as Raytheon Systems Limited), is a technology and innovation leader specialising in defence, national security, and other government and commercial markets around the world. Key markets include Mission Systems Integration, Network-Enabled Capabilities, Mission Support and Global Training Solutions.As a trusted supplier to the UK Ministry of Defence, Raytheon UK designs, develops and manufactures a range of high technology electronic systems and software at its facilities in England, Scotland and Wales. It also is a major technology exporter to more than 40 countries.Working for Raytheon as programme manager on a £30m+ Software Development programme he was responsible for a team of more than 25 engineers who were distributed across 2 main sites. This product is an integrated toolset of products designed to facilitate geospatial information exploitation for planning over a distributed network of organisations. The product utilises commercial web based technologies with Java and distributed Oracle Databases at its core.

Since 2009 James has held concurrent roles as Head of Critical National Infrastructure (CNI) Programmes and the Single European Sky Air Traffic Management Research (SESAR) Programme Manager.As SESAR Programme Manger he was responsible for the 25 staff working on 14 research projects (worth €11m) providing ATM operational consultuncy, systems engineering and prototype development to form part of the new solution.He was also responsible for the CNI Programme business until which targeted the Rail and Air Traffic Management industries. Typical projects were for software systems integration but also included the placement of on-site consultants. 40 staff worked within the CNI business which had an annual turnover of £8m.

James worked as profit & loss manager, programmes manager, project manager and software engineer for VEGA Group Plc often on concurrent roles. These included:Managing the transition of Aerospace Programmes from a P & L business into a matrix management structure. He was responsible for the 25 staff which generated annual turnover of £3m.Developing the Software Development business he was fully responsible for 20 staff, the profit and loss, and direction of the business. He ensured that profitability dramatically improved during this period with the development of a very successful stream of business. The annual turnover increased from £1m to £3m during this period.Project Managed a £2.3M development following the SCRUM methodology. The project was high profile and undertaken once it was already on the critical path. It was successfully delivered maintaining the original schedule and led to follow on work for VEGA. He managed a team of 23 staff.Technically managed the development of a multi-processor real-time safety critical medical device. James discussed evolving requirements with the customer and oversaw the development team of 20 engineers. He also took on the design, development and support of the software on the secondary processor. Post delivery he assumed responsibility for management of the support team located at the customer site.

Primarily James worked as a developer for its main Document Image Processing (DIP) product (Archium). This involved customer support and development on both MS-DOS and UNIX platforms. A considerable part of James’ employment involved porting a Motif based client application to MS-Windows.James also designed and produced a number of MS-DOS and UNIX based tools to introduce an Optical Disk Autochanger in to the system. As a result of this work James produced two SCSI Device Drivers, one for an Optical Disk Drive and one for an Autochanger for both SCO and HP/UX Operating Systems.
