About James L.
I am an electrical engineer who works across disciplines to achieve device integration. From working with research to characterize new features, to debugging existing hardware and firmware designs, my work has brought me through different stages of the early development cycle and is exposing me to verification activities as my first projects progress. To supplement my engineering degree, I have a minor in business for which I developed skills in leadership and business practice. My key experiences include:● Repairing and reconstructing the power supply for a laser that had scarce documentation● Leading the development, design, and construction of picnic tables for my middle school as an Eagle Scout project

Hardware Engineer Ii
Medtronic is a leading company in the medical device industry. Its Cardiac Rhythm Management (CRM) division specializes in devices treating common heart ailments, such as pacemakers.I currently work within Electrical System Design, a function which focuses on testing the properties and interfaces of various subsystems against requirements. In addition, we also facilitate the integration of work from different job functions into our programs.
Hardware Engineer I
Undergraduate Research Assistant
I conducted undergraduate research in a photonics lab throughout my undergraduate career, in which I served multiple roles. My freshman year research centered on holography. The lab's principal investigator ran an annual outreach program at a local high school physics class, where he teaches them about light and uses holograms to add an immersive component. My research refined the techniques to make higher quality holograms and added a new type of display that enhanced the outreach project.I then transitioned to the role of a lab assistant my sophomore year. My primary project in that capacity was to repair a dysfunctional power supply so that one of the lasers could operate again. I diagnosed the fault as an internal water leak, which then required disassembling the power supply and replacing the o-ring seals. Despite numerous setbacks and delays (including a lack of technical documentation and being sent home for the COVID-19 pandemic), I successfully reconstructed the laser. The laser was then once again fully operational after years of being out of service and will help various faculty with their research.
Ic Design Engineer Intern
I spent my third summer with Medtronic working remotely for analog IC design. My primary project involved developing a circuit model on LTspice for a test instrument and comparing it to both our prototype and design specifications. Using the modeled data, I wrote a report evaluating how the design fulfilled our needs and made recommendations on how to improve performance.Throughout the internship I also reached into various side projects. Among these were creating a MATLAB script for data conversion and analyzing simulation data to confirm specifications in corner cases.
Firmware Engineering Intern
I spent my second summer with Medtronic as a firmware engineering intern. My primary responsibility was to develop and verify a virtual environment for testing a future product's circuit boards. As I completed my work on the test environment, I volunteered to assist with investigating a new structure for the project's unit tests. In this second role, I led some team discussions about the effectiveness of our unit tests and how we could improve their reliability with a new mocking system.
Product Engineering Intern
During my first summer at Medtronic, I was a member of the Device Product Engineering (DPE) team, which specializes in testing devices and systems. DPE ensures that devices meet design input specifications. In my position, I contributed to multiple projects. My primary responsibility involved compiling the operations manual for a research system. Secondary tasks included characterization and analysis of battery longevity, and documenting the usage of commands on a controller board.
Crew Member
I was hired as a cook and acquired some cross-training to prepare ice cream. I also trained new crew members after gaining some experience in food preparation and janitorial duties.
Boy Scout
I actively participated in troop activities, including biweekly meetings and quarterly camping trips. I attained the rank of Eagle Scout on March, 2014. My leadership positions within the troop included:● Junior Assistant Scoutmaster for 12 months, acting as a role model and resource for the younger scouts as they took leadership within the troop● Senior Patrol Leader for 6 months, leading the events, collaborating with adult leaders, and training the patrol leaders● Assistant Senior Patrol Leader for 6 months● Patrol Leader for 12 months, leading a quarter of the troop at events and checking in with younger scouts during "patrol time" to guide them in advancement● Assistant Patrol Leader for 6 months● Scribe for 12 months, attending the Patrol Leader's Council, recording decisions made at the meetings, and documenting the troop's eventsRelevant merit badges that I earned include:● Computers● Electronics● Chemistry● Communications● Personal Management (covering personal finances)● Citizenship (in the Community, Nation, and World)● Radio
