About James Randall

I have been developing software for as long as I can remember, ever since I was introduced to a BBC micro at school, and from squeezing out an extra few CPU cycles on constrained 8-bit micros and embedded systems to taking advantage of highly elastic modern cloud platforms, the web, and mobile devices continue to enjoy it tremendously.It gives me a huge kick to work with a team to ship a new piece of software, get that first customer onboard, learn from feedback, and grow a solution.In recent years I've been mixing technical and business strategy with hands on implementation and currently run a lean startup inside an enterprise working with small end to end project delivery teams to ship products and demonstrate market fit on small budgets, reducing risk, while at the same time exceeding expectations for sales and revenue through an improved market fit. There's a big emphasis on automating as much as possible and gathering feedback from customers, both directly and with analytics, to improve the software and iterate fast.It's great fun and a challenging mix to be grooming product concepts, working on product design and processing feedback, implementing stories (typically using JavaScript and C#), and rolling out releases through a continuous deployment system all within a busy week.As time allows I work on open source, occasionally present at user groups, and blog and I find this to be a great way to keep up to date with industry innovations.     Working mostly on a single project at a time I acted as the primary technical authority on a number of projects in a number of different technology spaces including desktop using WinForms and WPF and the web using SharePoint and MVC with WCF as a part of the foundational architecture in both spaces.The highlight of this role was working on a multiple award winning data analysis tool called SIMS Discover that I was fortunate enough to be able to take from the early concept stage looking at how we might use emerging technologies and capabilities through to delivering the final application building the team as we went. The final product involved bringing together a slick design and user experience focussed on simplicity (learn one key action and you could pretty much do everything), a WCF service layer running both within IIS and self hosted, a domain specific language for defining starting point graphs, and a dynamic abstract syntax tree builder for building queries as the user manipulated canvas objects.Being able to work on that project with that team remains a real source of pride for me and it's fantastic to still hear about the impact it's made to results and outcomes where it's been deployed.
