I lecture and provide consultancy on the transition of newspapers from print to digital and on digital media skills.

Writing and editing for a variety of publications including Wired, POLITICO, The Guardian, Nature, New Scientist, Prospect and The Daily Nation (Kenya).

I commissioned and edited national news stories for print and digital on topics ranging from crime to politics. I also oversaw the Guardian's environment and science coverage and line-managed specialist reporters in these beats.The role involved highly collaborative team-work, but also periods when I ran the desk and was making editorial calls on my own. It requires quick decision-making, consistently good news judgement, excellent story verification skills and an ability to spot creative news angles that will move forward the stories of the day. It routinely involved handling complicated and legally sensitive material with tight deadlines as well as running investigative projects that included undercover work. I helped to set the news agenda for the day by deciding which stories to pursue and commissioning reporters, specialists and freelancers. I also worked with others across the organisation to develop content that would help our coverage to stand out online – for example, by commissioning interactive graphics, data journalism treatments, galleries, user engagement, custom web design, podcasts and multimedia. The role also involved contributing to long-term strategic planning by generating ideas for reporting projects and eye-catching treatments for upcoming diary events.

This secondment position was leading a massive reporting and investigative venture - one of the largest the Guardian has ever undertaken - allied to an editorial campaign on fossil fuel disinvestment. I was in charge of a 40-strong team drawn from across the organisation (and around the world) with a diverse array of skills. The project was awarded Campaign of the Year at the British Journalism Awards 2015.The content included a series of investigative pieces on the actions of major fossil fuel companies. One investigation revealed the existence of a secret BP archive of research findings on renewable energy that was unknown outside the company. As a result of the story, the company's chairman Carl-Henric Svanberg was forced at its AGM into a commitment to open the archive up to researchers (although BP has since reneged on that). The series also included a piece uncovering how Shell's internal business strategy falls far short of its climate rhetoric and a story revealing how coal company Peabody Energy exploited the ebola crisis to promote coal. The series was awarded the US Society of Environmental Journalists Kevin Carmody Award for outstanding in-depth reporting (large market).A major highlight of the Keep it in the Ground project was Mekong: A River Rising, a multimedia-heavy and logistically challenging reportage piece from Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos exploring the impact of climate change on communities in the region. It broke new ground at the Guardian in the way we integrated text, video and data as well as its presentation on mobile. It won a Webby for best use of video or moving image and a One World Media Award for digital media.The project also included more light-hearted and experimental treatments, including a set of short animated videos designed for social media and a zero-carbon city built in the online Minecraft world.

I regularly deliver guest lectures on digital journalism, science/environmental journalism and blogging at universities around the country including Imperial College London, Cardiff University and Manchester University. I am also produce and deliver Guardian Masterclasses on a range of topics.
