The role's key accountabilities across the UK’s biggest port and busiest inland waterway are:- Ensure that the PLA operates in a way that fully complies with the legal obligations of a Statutory Port Authority and the requirements of the Port Marine Safety Code.- Direct and oversee the harbour master team to ensure that safety of navigation is maintained throughout the river and that appropriate security and emergency response procedures are in place.- Ensure a safe, reliable and efficient pilotage service, as Competent Harbour Authority, is provided to meet the needs of the PLA’s shipping and terminal customers.- Oversee a legally compliant and effective Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) for all vessel movements on the tidal Thames.- Manage all operations cost effectively to ensure the port provides a commercially attractive service for customers.

Role included: • Responsible for the day-to-day nautical operations of a globally deployed cruise ship fleet of 38 ships through the company’s Fleet Operation Centre including coordinating multi-stakeholder support for significant operational issues across multiple overseas headquarters. • Collaborative partner in the development of custom-built software tools such as the Neptune proprietary software application which is a state-of-the-art tracking and data analysis platform providing real-time information sharing between ships and shoreside teams.• Other responsibilities included maintaining and developing the shore-side crisis management response, intact stability issues, shipborne operational quality assurance programme, Nautical support and Incident Commander role in crisis.

Employed as Commander Mobile Sea Training responsible for the training of UK and foreign warships covering a broad spectrum of activity from basic sea training for ships proceeding from refit / build to those preparing for overseas operations.

Selected to command a brand new Type 45 Air Defence Destroyer and tasked with taking it from build on the Clyde to first Operational Deployment. Responsible for a Ship’s Company of 200 personnel, a billion pound asset, delivery of a complicated engineering project with a multi-million pound budget. Within the first year was successful in getting the ship into Service 4 months ahead of schedule with multi-agency support. Role involved extensive shiphandling in both commercial and naval dockyards as well as operating the platform within the agreed Safety Environmental Management System. Additionally, one of two mentors in the Royal Navy for personnel aspiring to undertake the demanding Royal Navy Command Qualification (equivalent of STCW II/2 Master's qualification), this role includes training personnel in navigation, pilotage and bridge skills. Also employed as an RN Command Qualification Examiner.

Employed as the Second-in-Command of a Type 42 Destroyer during a busy 24 month period incorporating two operational deployments and final decommissioning from service. Role was effectively Chief of Staff on-board responsible to the Commanding Officer for the output of the ship as well as the responsibility for discipline and welfare of 250 personnel. Secondary duties included being the Safety, Health and Environmental Officer, Security Officer and in charge of whole-ship training in firefighting, damage control and seamanship. Stood-in as the Commanding Officer on a number of occasions, conducting numerous pilotage runs and shiphandling evolutions in UK waters and overseas. Became the ship’s de facto Commanding Officer and responsible for the project management of the decommissioning of the ship during the final two months of its life.

Selected from over 30 tri-service peers for this demanding role supporting one of the three principals in charge of the UK’s Joint Headquarters. Role was the coordinator of the Operations Division (UK’s joint operations centre) and tasked with providing command of UK’s globally deployed forces and giving politically aware military advice to the Ministry of Defence. Required regular oral and written briefings of senior political, military and diplomatic personnel during a busy period with the withdrawal of UK forces from Iraq and build-up of forces in Afghanistan. Travelled frequently to crisis regions to resolve operational issues as well as the development and refinement of strategic plans.

Employed in a variety of roles in a small team of high calibre tri-service officers responsible within the Joint Headquarters for the UK's contribution to operations in Afghanistan. Undertook a raft of duties including Liaison Officer in Afghanistan; Deputy Team Leader; Foreign Force coordinator (troubleshooting issues involving the multinational force operating in Helmand under UK command); Security Sector Reform (training of Afghanistan indigenous forces), and Counter Narcotics Coordinator. Role required handling complex multi-national, multi-agency issues involving senior political, military and diplomatic personnel in the UK, Europe, Middle East and South East Asia. Also tasked with leading small teams of experts to crisis manage logistics, budgetary, command and support issues in various allied military headquarters at short notice.

On relinquishing Operations Officer role, became the Senior Warfare Officer responsible to the Commanding Officer for the war-fighting capability of the ship including the mentoring of bridge personnel for STCW purposes. Position included the management of the department, its multi-million pound assets and over 85 personnel.
