Peer Supporter
As a Peer Supporter I along with an amazing team of other Peer Supporters offer a confidential environment for people within the community who are struggling with mental health, and also the effects of suicide. We offer an ear to listen, to validate and create a space free of charge as sometimes the last line of hope as many of the services provided are stretch to their capacity. Not only is this extremely rewarding but also inspirational meeting an amazing array of people along the way and hearing their truely inspirational and brave accounts of suicide and mental health. This was a further extension of the already 3 years with the Trust in the capacity of Hope Walk and Collection Day co-ordinator which helped raise thousands for the trust to help subside therapy sessions and also fund the peer support program through the Hope Centre. These were successful grass roots campaigns and helped raise awareness within the community.
Member Board Of Trustees
Crisis Cafe Peer Supporter
Life Matters is starting a Crisis Café very soon at the Hope Centre in partnership with the Dunedin’s Police Core Deployment Taskforce. The Police have informed us that they receive many crisis calls from people who are struggling but don’t always have somewhere they can take them to receive support. We want the Hope Centre to be a place where people can come after hours and during peak times of mental distress when/if they can’t get support elsewhere. This is all new to us, so to test the waters we will start operating our Crisis Café from 1pm-9pm on a Thursday afternoon/evening. This may extend to more hours and more days if this garners a good response. We’re excited to be able to bring this much needed service to the community and extend our scope of work to our Dunedin whānau.

Overseas Education Office Facilitator
Worked with the Overseas Education office teaching students from around the globe through the Spring to Summer program. COVID had changed the teaching of the program and much of the program was based on the Zoom platform. Students were located from approximately 50 countries and experienced huge insight into the experiences of youth of what have been shaped by COVID from the start to the finish of the program. The effects of COVID are not widely felt on the youth of New Zealand as much as the youth around the world. That social awareness was quite moving. Perhaps the biggest issue apart from language barrier's was loosing my female students from Afghanistan when the Taliban took over which highlighted that not even education is above geopolitics. A fantastic program run by Ferris State and highly rewarding experience to be part of.
