Reviewing and evaluating Henry Smith's grantmaking to social purpose organisations supporting vulnerable people around the UK. Developing organisational learning around grantmaking priorities and practices.

The Prosperity Fund (PF) is a £1.2 billion UK government facility to promote economic growth and reduce poverty in developing countries. I recently evaluated the potential climate change contributions of PF projects through business case analysis; I co-designed analysis tools, built an analytical database and developed project case studies. Also conducted contribution analysis assessing PF anti-corruption programmes through (i) literature reviews of corruption issues and anticorruption measures (ii) creating a typology and ranking of anticorruption measures (iii) evaluating theories of change, log frames, assumptions, performance indicators and other documentation (iv) consulting with programme stakeholders to validate findings and (v) identifying next steps for further research and learning.

Analysed quantitative and qualitative data from questionnaires and focus groups on media consumption (and trust in media) in six Western Balkans countries to produce summary narratives on each country and a comparative regional summary. My analyses contribued to a comprehensive report on perceptions and attitudes in the region delivered to UK government policymakers. As editor I integrated my analyses and other analysts’ summaries (e.g. on attitudes to the UK) into ‘country annexes’, reworking annex structure, copyediting and devising engaging data visualisations to ensure clarity, consistent language and tone of voice. The report was very well received by the client.

I led a team of 3 researchers conducting a mixed methods survey of people using Edinburgh Food Project (EFP) foodbanks and foodbank volunteers in order to assess the demand for non-food advice and support services and make relevant policy recommendations to EFP. I created the research proposal and study design, and collaborated with colleagues and foodbank staff to develop the research methodology, research instruments, data collection procedures and schedule. I conducted interviews with foodbank clients, volunteers and external experts, prepared quantitative and qualitative analysis and planned, wrote and presented the final report with policy recommendations for EFP trustees. Our findings and analysis were very well received, provide a robust evidence base for strategic policy decisions and consequently EFP is pursuing hitherto unexplored funding opportunities.

I researched and developed the content, structure, tone and layout for a guide for potential investors in non-state education in low-income contexts in the global south, commissioned by development agencies including BRAC, CDC and DFID. I advised the report author on non-state education initiatives and relevant policies in developing countries, recommended relevant literature and policy documents, education initiatives and practitioners, drafted key participant interview schedules, developed and edited the report text and design.

I planned, developed and quality assured 20 chapters (written by 6 different expert authors) for a new Digital Media and Design International A-Level textbook to meet strict Cambridge syllabus objectives and HarperCollins' content, layout and style requirements. I briefed and coached authors on content requirements, language level and tone. I also devised student activities, developed and proofread the texts to ensure they met Cambridge standards.

Together with fellow SLA trustees, I researched and evaluated education-focussed Indian NGOs applying for 3-year grants, eliciting recommendations from experts, drafting evaluation criteria and project agreements, visiting and analysing candidates' projects in India, drafting and presenting recommendations to SLA Trustees. The two NGOs we recommended have attracted £100,000+ in new donations through the Girls' Lives Matter appeal which I devised and developed in collaboration with SLA staff.

I proposed and wrote features on development issues including Asian demographics, climate change, infrastructure and globalization risks. Interviewed policymakers, academics and business leaders for this award-winning magazine targeting insurers, asset managers, regulators and policymakers.

I advised and coached researchers writing case studies for this UNDP/USAID/DFID programme. Advised on case study content, structure and tone, conducted workshops with researchers on writing style and interview technique, developed and proofread the studies to demanding UNDP criteria.

I developed and wrote a risk report targeting insurers, asset managers, policymakers. I researched UN databases and interviewed experts to analyse megacity risks and opportunities. I also conceptualised and managed the production of infographics by external agencies. Allianz distributed the report worldwide generating widespread media coverage.

Developed “the model for sharing expertise, being an information leader” (Social Media Sustainability Index), doubled site visits, attracted 6,000+ newsletter subscribers and prestigious content partners (WWF, TED) and inspired Allianz to launch Knowledge micro-sites worldwide. Wrote expert interviews, features, photo essays, and produced short films and interactive animations such as "World of 7 Billion".

I compiled a database of education business model innovations according to World Bank criteria, wrote business model analyses and case studies by assessing company records, policy documents and key participant interviews. This work helped secure another World Bank research consultancy.

I developed organisational strategy, communications and content plans, commissioned and project managed new website, speaker events, video production and other communications. Wrote op-ed articles and secured press coverage helping attract Scottish Government, university and private sector funding.

I proposed, researched and wrote this report on low-cost private schooling, combining desk research with analysis of key participant interviews and observations conducted in India. This study enabled Endeva to secure a World Bank research consultancy on education innovations.

Launched WiMAX Vision magazine and online bulletin in 2007-2008 for publisher Informa, directing editorial strategy for market-leading wireless business publication. Contributed news, analysis, features, and managed internal and external contributors. United States freelance correspondent in 2004-2005 and regular contributor of news/features to Informa business publications Mobile Communications International magazine, Mobile Communications Europe and Telecom Markets.Contributor of environment/education features to The Scotsman newspaper.

Managed employer's diary on overseas assignments. Ghost-wrote Tokyo’s Depression Diplomacy, lead essay in the Winter 1998 issue of international affairs journal Foreign Affairs.Edited employer’s study of US-Japan relations, Alliance Adrift (1999). Edited translation of the Japanese Prime Minister’s Commission report on Japan’s Goals in the 21st Century, The Frontier Within (2000).Edited English-language translations of employer's columns, contributed travel/review articles and photographs to the English-language Asahi Evening News.

Taught English to a variety of students from high school children to businesspeople, twice promoted, achieved “excellent” student renewal rates. Produced school newsletter and selected by head office to create print/audio materials for in-house textbooks.
