About James Warner

Growing up I was always curious as to how things worked and would pull busted devices out of dumpsters to see if I could get them working again. I had a hit or miss success rate but learned from each experience. When I got to high school, I took a basic electronics course and remember being frustrated at not knowing what was inside the chips we would see on some of the PC boards. I guess you could call it the curiosity curse. My parents believed in the power of education, so they pushed a lot of math and science courses starting in Jr. high school. I was getting burned out so after high school I joined the military to get a break from learning. While this was a positive growing experience the desire to understand the objects around me didn’t go away. So, you guessed it, I got out of the military and got a degree in electrical engineering. After graduation I took a job at a small semiconductor OEM as a service engineer as I still wanted to take things apart. The job allowed for travel, which I got the bug for while in the military, as my clients were in Asia and Europe. The job evolved into not just figuring out how things work but applying that learning to creating documentation. I would write documents as small as work instructions to as large as system manuals. The real challenge was to articulate complex concepts simply as the service engineers for our overseas customers often had limited command of the English language. I liked the hands on but eventually learned that sometimes to make changes one needs authority, so I moved into management running our service organization. This was an interesting growth experience as now I was not only responsible for customers but also direct reports.Eventually I took over operations the hardware operations of our in-house R & D lab. This opened a whole new world. It was no longer just understanding the equipment we developed but all the support equipment and associated facilities. This meant crafting work instructions for equipment that another vendor made which was interesting. Safety became a higher priority as I was now responsible for anyone working or entering the lab space. To that end I joined the emergency response team and got a chemical handling certification so I could better understand this aspect of the job. As we were a smaller company and had no project management group, I became responsible for managing lab projects. This could be as small as installing a bulk fill cabinet to major fab alterations and/or construction.

Listed skills include Troubleshooting, Semiconductors, Semiconductor Industry, Testing, and 9 others.
