Mr. Whelan was the first mechanical engineer for S-E-A, LTD in the Elk Grove Village Office, a suburb of Chicago. He was responsible for developing the mechanical engineering group into a multidisciplinary team, in addition to mentoring engineers in satellite offices.

Responsibilities included acquiring product knowledge of lubrications systems and designing custom solutions for global customers. Specific duties included designing single-line, progressive, and air-oil systems for automotive machining centers, forging equipment, and mobile machinery. Supported other lubrication engineers on the design of dual line, restrictor, and oil mist systems. Inspected failed products and developed corrective actions to prevent future failures. Created a new low-cost kitted automatic oil lubrication system for industrial fans by addressing clients' needs in the USA and collaborating with a development team in Germany.

Worked as an applications engineer at customer locations, assisting them on roller bearing selection, installation, maintenance and failure analysis. Customers included original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in the southwest; manufacturing industrial products, including superchargers, fans, wind turbines, off-shore petroleum equipment (pumps, draw works), mining equipment (traction motors, crushers, shaker screens), robotics, medical equipment and industrial food processing equipment.
