About James William De Mortimer
Commencing my formal marketing experience with IBM, my career has evolved from traditional marketing with Event Hospitality and Entertainment, Fitness First, Compass Group and Wagamama through to sports - working with the All Blacks, BLK Sport, SANZAAR (the administrators of Super Rugby and The Rugby Championship) and Bleacher Report.Over the last seven years I challenged myself away from corporate, founding my own agency (with over $2M AUD of billings) and am Non-Executive Director of STADIUUM Group (and former Co-Founder and CMO), a multi-million $ sports media intelligence startup:- Previously built out sports first SMMS platform (with Sendible tech)- World's first sports news aggregator (built with AI) @ stadiuum.com- USA focused betting intelligence platform @ quuant.io- Corporate and investor website @ stadiuumgroup.comIt all began as a writer. I became the youngest ever invitee to the prestigious Canterbury Young Authors Conference (aged seven) and had a Dungeons & Dragon module published in 1990 (I still have the original manuscript). Before marketing I worked in some of New Zealand's finest venues including Shed 5, Logan Brown and Brasserie Flipp. My first professional award was claimed in 2008, beating Fairfax masthead stuff.co.nz and the NZ Herald for the New Zealand award for best Sports and Recreation site with allblacks.com.This was claimed a further four times (in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013).I moved to Australia in 2000 and at 23 was responsible for a multi million $ budget leading a team of 30+ at one of Brisbane's busiest hotels.I ran marketing for a 3M catchment area for Fitness First (at the time the biggest gym chain in Australia), ran events at the iconic XXXX brewery for Compass Group (the world's biggest food service company) and built one of Australia's first hospitality CRM at Wagamama (a global Japanese chain headquartered in England). In 2007 I pivoted into digital, gaining a prestigious contract with the All Blacks. I aided the launch of numerous websites and social media which breached the world's top 50 in 2015 with over 10M fans. While working for New Zealand Rugby I commenced a contract with SANZAAR, who oversee the premier domestic and international rugby competitions in the Southern Hemisphere. I would launch the official website and social media and was initially the interim Media and Communications Manager reporting to the CEO.A brief contract with BLK Sport, which at it's peak outfitted more sport's teams than Nike and Adidas, was followed by my move into agency and startup life.

Interim Media And Communications Manager
Responsible for Marketing, Media, Communications, Public Relations and Journalism duties for SANZAAR for two full seasons of Super Rugby and The Rugby Championship during 2011 and 2012. The former was a landmark campaign that saw the entry of the Melbourne Rebels, increasing the 14 team format to 15. This season was infamous for the devastating earthquake that killed 185 people in Christchurch, forcing eventual beaten finalists the Crusaders to play every match away from home, including the first ever Super Rugby match in the Northern Hemisphere (against the Sharks in London). Meanwhile the championship winning Reds barely saw water cleared from Suncorp Stadium after the SE Queensland Floods of 2010/2011 claimed the lives of 38 people. Operated in this capacity in the absence of a Media and/or Communications Manager, stepping back early 2013 to focus on our burgeoning digital, content and social media requirementsRole included end-to-end compilation of releases, digital marketing for 18 teams across three countries, CEO ghostwriting, project management and interviews of stakeholders, coaches and players. Was lead project manager, preparing road-maps and using agile methodology for the 2012 and 2013 Super Rugby Media guides, covering over 500 players and hundreds of support and coaching staff over a 400+ page document released to several hundred media contacts.
Editor In Chief (Australia And New Zealand)
Most viewed writer, and Editor in Chief for Australia & NZ for Bleacher Report, acquired by Turner Sports for $175m (AUD) in 2012, ranked in the world's top 20 sport sites with nine-figure turnover in 2019. Predominantly a US sport news site, Australia & NZ were part of an expansion policy for their User Generated Content, my role entailed the editing, curation and social marketing of the region.
Head Of Marketing Apac
Wagamama began in the United Kingdom in 1992 and was recently brought out by Duke Street capital for quarter of a billion pounds. Currently operating 120 restaurants throughout the UK, the Australian arm of the business opened its first restaurant in 2005 but went into liquidation nine years later. This was largely due to an overly aggressive expansion plan which saw it open four additional restaurants during my tenure operating the country's flagship store in Fortitude Valley.Rose quickly through the ranks, starting as a Front of House Manager before being promoted to AGM and then General Manager. Oversaw all operations for the SE QLD flagship store in Fortitude Vallery while Queen Street Mall and Chermside began operations under the Area General Manager. Multi-million dollar operation that would turn over nearly 250 covers on peak nights. Was later promoted to Head of Marketing (APAC).
Marketing And Events Manager
Venue Manager for the XXXX Alehouse overseeing Sales and Marketing, the tourism element of the Castlemaine Perkins factory in Milton, built 1878. The Alehouse incorporated the famous brewery tour (think Willy Wonka but for Beer) and a purpose built brand new drinks/dining area which hosted on average a function every day. I managed the end-to-end process for these events, building powerful internal and external relationships to guide the client through all steps of the service cycle, including managing the operations on the day and closing the account. Co-reported to Compass Group Area Manager and XXXX Alehouse GM.
Marketing Manager
Oversaw membership marketing in SE-QLD for one of the world's largest gym chains, a position that coincided with the beginning of my own personal fitness journey. In school I was a multiple winner of 'Mr Puniverse' and in my mid-twenties I decided enough was enough. Came up with innovative strategies for mass signings via B2B acquisition. While transforming my own body I broke numerous sign-up records, signing up an average of over 1000 members per month (personally) with a churn rate of less than 5%. Responsible for Marketing to a 2 million plus catchment area - growing BTL/LAM activity to grow membership from 19,000 to 32,000 in 12 months (nearly 70% CAGR).
Banquet Operations Manager
Oversaw the multi-million (AUS) banquet's division of the 304 bed Rydges Hotel in Brisbane. Managed a team of 30 plus, ran at least 70 weddings and approximately 1,000 functions each year. Responsible for matrix management of other departments including kitchen, front office and housekeeping. Won numerous venue awards including the prestigious ABIA best hotel wedding reception for three years running. Achieved a company record profit (BL) average exceeding 30% year-to-year. Reported directly to the F&B Manager who put me on the company corporate program from 2001.
