Dr James McGrath (BSc, PGDip, PhD, MinstP, CPhys) has accumulated over 14 years of experience working in the field. His research background focusses on aerosol science, indoor and outdoor air pollutants, thermal comfort and impacts on human health. His primary research area examines the nexus between indoor environmental quality, ventilation and energy performance. He provides valuable evidence to aid in developing solutions and inform policy development and implementation. James is a member of a number of professional societies. He currently serves as the treasurer on the ISIAQ’s Board of Directors, the Irish representative on the AIVC Board and the led Irish participant on IEA EBC Annex86. He is also a committee member of the Aerosol Society of the UK and Ireland. James’s combined monetary achievements are in excess of €2.0 M as PI and Co-PI. He has been invited as a keynote speaker on radon and ventilation at various national and international conferences, as well as invited expert advisor to the National Radon Control Strategy on the topic of ventilation. He has a wealth of experience in public outreach and regularly engages with multiple media outlets (tv productions, radio interviews, and national newspapers) on radon, indoor air quality and ventilation.

Research FellowUniversity Of Galway Jan 2022 - Apr 2023Galway, County Galway, IrelandA Research Fellow working on the SEAI funded project entitled “BENEFIT - Building Evaluations for Indoor Air Quality and Comfort in the Non-Residential Sector Following Energy Efficient Improvement”. Co-PI and main author of the proposal. The BENEFIT project is evaluating indoor air quality, risks of overheating and occupant comfort following energy-efficient improvements in non-domestic Irish buildings. This comprehensive assessment will focus on three distinct cohorts to establish baseline metrics: deep energy retrofitted buildings in SEAI’s Pathfinder programme, newly constructed energy-efficient buildings and previously retrofitted classrooms. -
Research FellowUniversity Of Galway Dec 2020 - Dec 2021Galway, County Galway, IrelandA Research Fellow working on the SEAI funded project entitled “Assessment of VentilAtion effectiveness via a Longitudinal indoor environmental study in ‘A’ rated Irish Dwellings: VALIDate”. Co-PI and main author of the proposal. The project was a longitudinal study conducting multi-zone indoor environmental quality monitoring in 100 ‘A’ rated energy-efficient Irish residential dwellings. The project monitored environmental quality (temperature, humidity, CO2, radon and VOCs) over two heating and cooling season. Overall, a comprehensive and scientifically robust assessment of the effectiveness of the ventilation system in ‘A’ rated dwellings was carried out. -

Postdoctoral ResearcherUniversity Of Galway Jun 2017 - Nov 2017Galway, County Galway, IrelandA postdoctoral researcher working on the SEAI funded project entitled “The Relationship between Radon and Ventilation in Retrofit Buildings: Experimentation Validation of Model predictions”. Co-PI, and main author of the proposal. The study characterised the ventilation status, air tightness and eight selected hourly air change rates measurements, of a sample of naturally-ventilated dwellings in Ireland. The experimentally-obtained values were used to parameterise a computational model for these selected dwellings and to predict radon concentrations. The data generated can be used in modelling simulations to predict indoor radon concentrations based on local meteorological conditions, building characteristics, ventilation guidelines and energy- retrofit measurements. -
Postdoctoral ResearcherUniversity Of Galway Mar 2016 - May 2017Employed as a postdoctoral researcher working on the EPA funded (2015-HW-DS-4) UNVEIL: Understanding VEntilation and radon in energy efficient buildings in IreLand project in NUI Galway. Co-PI, and main author of the proposal.A modelling framework was developed that incorporates a dynamic radon entry rate, capturing changes in pressure differentials, to investigate changes in radon concentration following different energy-efficient retrofit measures in naturally-ventilated dwellings. Overall, the simulations provide quantitative information that explains increased airtightness and elevated radon levels, highlighting the potential for radon concentrations to either increase or decrease following an energy retrofit. -
